Pilot Hall department celebrates its 10th anniversary

The development and modernisation of the Kvasiny plant necessitated the creation of a new Pilot Hall unit. It started its activities 10 years ago and has made a major contribution to improving the quality and continuity of serial production. The unit, based on a concept adopted from the VW Group, monitors the key dimensions of all cars using modern technology and can detect deviations as small as a few tenths of a millimetre. It also feeds knowledge from series production back into Technical Development.

  • Elroq RS flexes its power

More than 200 journalists attended the presentation of the Škoda Elroq RS model. They tested it on the route from Václav Havel Airport to Břehyně near Lake Mácha and on the local Aurel track. This facility allows for testing on a variety of surfaces and in different driving conditions. The new Enyaq RS Race concept from Škoda Motorsport was also showcased on site.

Elroq RS Shows its Power on the Test Track

Journalists tested the sporty version of the compact electric SUV at a dynamic presentation near Lake Mácha, which included a visit to the test track.

    Report

Fast, yet comfortable and elegant. That is how international motoring journalists described the new Škoda Elroq RS electric car after their first encounter with it on Czech roads and a closed track. The carmaker organised an international dynamic presentation of the new sports model from 9 to 15 June, offering more than 200 participants the opportunity to test the electric SUV on the journey from Prague’s Václav Havel Airport to the premises of its partner company Aurel CZ in Břehyně, near Lake Mácha, where a special programme awaited them at the test track.

In addition to accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, the Elroq RS also impresses with its outstanding driving dynamics, which participants were able to experience for themselves during a timed driving skills test. They had to master slalom, parking and other obstacles, which allowed them to test the car’s manoeuvrability in extreme conditions and demonstrate their driving skills. On public roads, journalists completed several selected routes that tested the car in a variety of situations.

    220

The number of journalists who attended the international presentation.

    6,500

The amount of electricity consumed in kWh during test drives.

    13,500

The number of kilometres covered by 22 cars during the dynamic presentation.

The carmaker also announced a new Powerpass tariff structure, which makes it easier to charge electric cars thanks to a network of up to 900,000 charging points across the EU (except in Portugal and Romania).

Participants also enjoyed an interesting comparison. As co‑drivers, they rode in a prototype of the Škoda 200 RS racing special. In addition to the latest addition to the RS series, they also tested a car that marked the beginning of Škoda’s sports car legacy in the 1970s with this two-letter brand name referring to rally sport.

    A joy to drive

The new Elroq RS was met with positive feedback from participants. “Apart from the optional 21-inch alloy wheels that reveal its true identity, you would hardly be able to distinguish the Elroq RS from the standard model in a subtler colour than Mamba Green. By contrast, drivers of powerful cars may think that a little bit of inconspicuousness isn’t a bad thing,” says Neil Briscoe from the Irish website Completecar, assessing the model’s appearance. The special edition of the Elroq RS in matte grey combines this restraint with uniqueness. It is a limited edition and the first Škoda production car in a matt colour.

“On an improvised technical track set up with cones, the Elroq RS proved to be a pleasure to drive. It is agile and confident, with good traction. It is definitely one of the most manoeuvrable cars that Škoda currently offers,” says Eva Srpová from Hospodářské noviny, assessing its driving characteristics.

The Elroq model is already available from Škoda dealers. The carmaker began series production in Mladá Boleslav in mid-June, together with the new Enyaq RS and Enyaq Coupé RS models.

    Aurel CZ Test Track

The Aurel CZ partner company’s centre in Břehyně near Lake Mácha enables extensive functional, stress and other tests of cars and components. The 52,000 m² site features tracks for testing advanced assistance, braking and stabilisation systems, as well as a gravel section for testing the durability of the bodywork and other car parts. Another special zone is used to test cars beyond their operating limits.

  • Rozhovor / martin-jahn

We couldn’t have wished for a better market launch

Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing, assesses the Elroq’s entry into global markets.

How satisfied are you with the Elroq’s market launch?

The Elroq’s entry into European markets has been excellent, as confirmed by the figures for the past two months. In April, the Elroq was the best-selling electric car in the EU, and in May, it reached second place. We couldn’t have wished for a better market launch.

Where is it performing best, in which markets has it exceeded expectations, and where did you have higher expectations?

The Elroq is doing very well in important markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom and Denmark. Overall, we’re satisfied with the sales results, although we had higher expectations for Norway and other Nordic markets.

What are the main factors behind the Elroq’s success?

It’s a combination of the excellent work of all our colleagues at Škoda Auto who created this car. The Elroq has an attractive Modern Solid design, compact dimensions and a competitive price comparable to combustion engine alternatives. Also worth mentioning is the wide range of connectivity features, including the improved MyŠkoda app, for which the Elroq received the Connected Car Award.

What do you expect from the RS sports version?

Continuing the RS brand legacy for purely electric cars. I believe that the Elroq RS will build on the success of the sporty versions of the Octavia and Kodiaq models. Electric cars can be just as fun to drive as those with combustion engines. The Elroq RS is a prime example of this and confirms it by being the fastest accelerating model in the Škoda brand portfolio.

    Innovation

Racing concept with a new look

At the Aurel CZ test track in Břehyně, the carmaker also presented journalists with a unique concept for the Enyaq RS Race car from Škoda Motorsport. It follows on from the previous version but is based on the new Enyaq Coupé RS model in the Modern Solid design. In addition to several improvements, it also features a new livery: a colourful “coat” combining white, grey, green and black.

The concept aims to promote innovative technologies and sustainable materials. It also serves as a pilot project for future mass-produced models.

Compared with the production model, the Enyaq RS Race underwent several significant changes. The removal of certain components and the use of innovative sustainable materials have reduced the electric car’s weight by more than 300 kilogrammes. The car has also gained additional technology inspired by the Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 racing special, including a hydraulic handbrake and special sports suspension.

Race drivers Dominik Stříteský, Jan Kopecký and Emil Lindholm demonstrated to journalists how this exceptional package works in practice. “The car is lower and has significantly modified geometry, so it handles very well and responds quickly. The weight reduction is very noticeable,” says Lindholm, describing the car’s performance. “The acceleration is fantastic, as is the instant access to maximum torque. The progress the Škoda Motorsport team has made in improving the driving characteristics of the Enyaq RS Race is truly remarkable. This car is really fun to drive,” says the 2022 WRC2 world champion.

  • All-wheel drives travel through Albania

A group of journalists and influencers set off on an adventurous trip through the Balkans in Octavia and Karoq cars with all-wheel drive. The Let’s Explore Albania event highlighted the advantages of these cars, which can handle even mountain terrain and gravel roads. Whilst camping, participants also tried out equipment from the Škoda E-Shop, including sleeping bags, blankets and outdoor cutlery.

    Adventure in Albania

    From Around the World

Albania offers wild mountains with dusty roads winding through rocky passes, beautiful lakes and coastline, as well as historic towns and traditional villages. It is also a long-standing and successful market for Škoda cars. This made it the natural choice for the carmaker to organise an event to showcase the advantages of the Octavia 4×4 and Karoq 4×4 models. The expedition, attended by selected influencers and journalists, began with a breathtaking drive to the northern city of Shkodër and continued to the extensive Rozafa Fortress and Lake Skadar. The crews camped on the latter’s shores and slept comfortably, among others, in the roof tents mounted on their cars. A wide range of equipment from the Škoda E-Shop was also ideal for spending time outdoors – sleeping bags, blankets, outdoor cutlery, thermos flasks, and more.

The Octavia and Karoq models with all-wheel drive demonstrated their versatility in the rugged Balkan terrain during the Let’s Explore Albania event.

The next day, the journey continued into the mountains, where the Škoda cars reached an altitude of 1,630 metres above sea level at the Qafa e Thorës pass. The participants visited the historic village of Theth with its fortified tower, which has become a symbol of national unity in Albania. On the last day, the final leg of the journey followed remote gravel roads to the Ura e Mesit bridge built in 1770.

  • It began with a single track

130 years ago, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement joined forces to manufacture bicycles. It wasn’t long before they fitted their bicycles with small engines. These single-track vehicles formed the foundations for Škoda Auto. And the carmaker hasn’t forgotten its roots, as it continues to support cycling at all levels, from amateur enthusiasts to the world’s most famous race, the Tour de France.

It All Started with a Bicycle

1894 It may have been a complaint about a Germania bicycle that prompted Václav Laurin and Václav Klement to join forces and start manufacturing their own.

In 1894, Václav Klement was riding a Germania bicycle made by the German company Seidel & Naumann, which had a branch in Ústí nad Labem. In July of that year, when the bottom bracket became misaligned, causing the chain to slip off, Klement packed up the bicycle and sent it by train to the manufacturer for warranty repair. However, the manufacturer had no intention of dealing with his customer’s informal request, handwritten on a piece of graph paper. The dismissive response from the branch manager infuriated Klement but also sparked an idea: to build bicycles himself. He partnered with Václav Laurin, a mechanic from Turnov, and in 1895, they began producing a successful line of bicycles under the name Slavia in a small workshop with five employees. Within a year, they already had five models of these bicycles and had grown to a staff of 21 employees.

Laurin and Klement produced Slavia bicycles in versions for men and women. Later, they also built a tandem bicycle that two people could ride together. As they emphasised perfect technical workmanship and reliability, they subjected the bicycles to rigorous testing. For example, their innovative bicycles with air-filled tyres remained “submerged at a depth of 3 metres for 24 hours, without the bearings showing the slightest sign of water penetration”. High-quality workmanship and easy maintenance contributed to the strong reputation of these bicycles.

The range was soon expanded to include a bicycle with an auxiliary motor called the Motocyclette, capable of speeds up to 30 km/h. From there, it was only a short step to their first motorcycle. In 1904, Klement saw his efforts vindicated when he received a letter signed by the director of the Seidel & Naumann branch. He requested a licence to manufacture Slavia motorcycles under the Germania brand, and Klement generously agreed.

But back to the bicycles. The Slavia was only the beginning for the company that would soon grow into a carmaker. Škoda returned bicycles to its range in 2003, available through its company e-shop. And just 10 years later, it launched its first electric bike, the Green E Line, produced in collaboration with renowned off-road specialist KTM. In 2018, the car manufacturer presented a scooter concept designed for sustainable urban mobility at the Geneva International Motor Show. The patented folding mechanism made it possible to easily place the scooter under the floor of the luggage compartment of the Octavia and Superb cars, above the spare wheel.

    Škoda employees and holidays

1921 This year sees the first mention of holidays for employees. They were entitled to one week starting on Monday and ending on Saturday. Even then, the company preferred to schedule holidays for all workers during the same week so that production could be interrupted or secured. Employees received holiday pay based on their length of service. Long-term employees were paid for 64 hours, those with less seniority were paid for 56 hours, and those with little seniority were only entitled to 48 hours (during a week that had the same number of working hours). Currently, the collective leave periods for production workers are based on the collective agreement, usually 14 days in the summer months and 14 days during the Christmas period. During this time, the carmaker uses their absence for maintenance, repairs, as well as the reconstruction or modernisation of existing plants.

    When two wheels keep turning

2003 Škoda Auto and cycling are inseparable, which is why the company has formed a long-standing partnership with the legendary Tour de France over the past 22 years.

In addition to directors’ cars, it supplies the Tour with a fleet of several hundred support and team cars every year. The carmaker has another unique privilege at the Tour. Since 2011, its team of designers has been designing trophies for the winners of the famous race, which are always based on uniform basic shapes and offer a new interpretation of the chosen theme each year. Through the trophies, the designers strive to showcase the artistry and craftsmanship of Czech glassmakers from the Lasvit glassworks. In addition to the Tour de France, the carmaker also supports the Tour de France Femmes avec ZWIFT women’s race, the public race L’Etape by Tour de France and a whole range of other cycling events.

    Director’s car

2004 Tour Director Christian Prudhomme received a first-generation Superb model as his mobile office, which was replaced by the second generation in 2008. In 2016, a modernised third generation entered service, which was also equipped with an electric motor for the 2019 edition. The car with hybrid technology paved the way for more eco-friendly and efficient vehicle operations in this role, and the red Enyaq director’s car continued this trend in 2020.

  • Výročí / 130-let--červenec-3

    The road to clean energy

In terms of factory heating, it was initially provided locally, such as with stoves in the offices. A major shift came with the new boiler room and engine room (the remains of which are now designated as building E6), with plans for its construction dating back to 1911. The photographs show the boiler room and engine room in the mid-1920s. By then, the factory’s energy infrastructure had been completed, including hydroelectric power plants in Mladá Boleslav and the surrounding area. A new independent boiler room was put into operation to support the plant’s construction in 1964.

When Škoda Auto teamed up with the VW Group, it began to make plans to establish an energy company. This was achieved a few years later, and on 1 July 1995, ŠKO-ENERGO was established as the first Czech-German joint venture in the energy industry.

ŠKO-ENERGO has been supplying energy to all Czech production plants of Škoda Auto and households in Mladá Boleslav since 2000. Specifically, it supplies electricity, heat, industrial, drinking and cooling water, compressed air and natural gas. It also treats and removes waste and surface water, operates and maintains all energy networks and provides comprehensive energy supply and energy management services. From the outset, it has relied on the use of modern technology and equipment, an environmentally friendly approach and the employment of experts. Since last autumn, the ŠKO‑ENERGO heating plant has been undergoing modernisation, which will enable the complete replacement of coal with wood chips and plant phyto pellets, leading to 100% biomass use and cutting CO2 emissions by 290,000 tonnes annually.

Václav Pelant reminisces about work at the Maintenance department

1976–2023 Václav Pelant joined the then AZNP as an apprentice locksmith and was assigned to Hall M5, where he spent almost 30 years before a transfer to Hall M12.

“I worked in Hall M5 (the small welding shop) even after my apprenticeship and was mainly involved in maintaining welding machines. I experienced times when almost all operations were carried out on manual jigs, especially on the front axle,” recalls Václav. Working in maintenance has always brought about a change in technology, especially when new models are launched, for example with the Favorit. “The KUKA robotic line to produce the front axle was put into operation. Later, a welding line was built here to assemble the body of the Fabia, and after its completion, production at M5 began to slow down,” adds Václav. At that time, the operation was divided into jig maintenance, machine maintenance and electrical maintenance. After production ceased in Hall M5, operations were transferred to Hall M12. There was a workshop for overhauling manual and robotic welding pliers. “We also carried out more demanding repairs when the pliers on the welding line broke down. For me, this transition was the biggest change because after 30 years, I had a completely different job and had to learn new procedures,” adds Václav, who worked in Hall M12 until 2023, when he retired.

  • Superb student car heads to the Tour de France

The latest student car, designed by pupils at the Škoda Auto Vocational School under the supervision of practical training instructors and based on the Superb Combi iV model, commemorates the carmaker’s anniversary and its connection to cycling. The 10th concept has been named L&K 130 and takes the form of a support vehicle for cycling races. It is also set to appear at the Tour de France.

From the Apprenticeship Workshops to the Tour de France

The 10th student car, named L&K 130, commemorates the carmaker’s anniversary and its enduring connection to the world of cycling. It is based on the plug-in hybrid Superb Combi iV.

When the next edition of the Tour de France kicks off on Saturday, 5 July, a large fleet of Škoda cars will once again accompany the cyclists, with one particular vehicle expected to stand out. The specially modified Superb Combi iV refers to the history of the Mladá Boleslav–based company, which celebrates 130 years this year, and its historical and contemporary connection with cycling. The car, called L&K 130, is the work of a team of students and teachers from the Škoda Auto Vocational School (SOUs) who built it as the 10th student car.

Before its official appearance at the world’s most famous cycling race, the model made its debut in front of journalists at the Třebešín velodrome in Prague. There, the students described all the modifications and tweaks to their concept. It is adapted for easy storage and transport of bikes. Naturally, the historic bicycle with which Laurin & Klement began production in 1895 was also on display.

    28

The number of students involved in building the car.

    2,000

Total number of hours team members spent rebuilding the L&K 130.

    Unusual modifications

The Superb served as the basis for a student car for the first time. The young designers had already made significant changes to its bodywork. The roof behind the C-pillar was cut off, and the B and C-pillars were reshaped.

They left only one seat in the back, which they supplemented with a large refrigerator for cold drinks. The cargo area has been converted into a large loading space similar to that of a pickup truck, which facilitates the handling of bicycles as it is extendable.

The right rear door was also specially modified to allow access to the mechanic’s seat. The door swings out to the side on hinges and slides backwards. This minimises the space required for the mechanic to exit, which enhances safety for cyclists. To keep the doors firmly in the bodywork, they have been given two locking mechanisms, and for this reason they also have an unusual detail: two external handles.

The distinctive look is given by the car’s red, gold and white colouring. These colours were part of the original Laurin & Klement logo, which can also be found in several places on the car.

    Growing interest

“There’s a growing interest in the student car project. Currently, 28 students have worked on its completion; however, about 50 students have been involved,” says Aleš Zíta, a teacher and lecturer in car repair and maintenance from the SE/B4 – Vehicle Branch department. He believes that more intensive involvement of more students is also desirable because the cars that the students modify are becoming increasingly complex. The current Superb plug-in hybrid is proof of this.

“It was a big challenge to design a car that could actually function as a support vehicle in the Tour de France,” says Tomáš Hradecký, one of the participating students. The previous nine concepts are also functional, but none of them has yet ventured into such a demanding environment where safety is paramount. This is also proof of how far the student car project has come in 10 models.

    When Apprentices Build a Car

Participants in student car projects describe their experiences.

    Trial by fire

Aleš Zíta, a teacher and lecturer in car repair and maintenance from SE/B4 – Vehicle Branch department, has been involved in every student car project except the first. This gives him a clear perspective on how the initiative has evolved over the years. “The cars we’re starting from are more complex, but that also gives students more opportunities to design and build creative features,” says A. Zíta. According to him, the entire spirit of the student car project is crucial. “Students learn how to work under stress, they get to experience how it works in real life, they don’t always get their way, and they have to defend their opinion,” he says.

    Improving not just the industry

Seventeen-year-old Bára Eliášová was the youngest member of the current student car team. As a second-year apprentice in automotive painting, she also gained some unexpected experiences. “I saw an opportunity to grow not only in my field but also in how I present myself. For example, I never thought I’d be speaking to journalists,” she says, noting how the project pushed her personal development. “The fact that the car is going to the Tour de France is a great reward for us,” adds B. Eliášová. She feels the project has broadened her horizons in numerous ways, especially in terms of teamwork.

    Room for creativity

The benefits of student cars are also confirmed by David Baňkowski, who worked on the first-ever such model, the Citijet. “It was something very different from what was normally done at school. And I was pleasantly surprised by the freedom we had then, the opportunity to be creative,” says D. Baňkowski who today works as a setter in the PKM/21 – Assembly Engine EA 211 department. He views the latest model very positively. “The new car really shows creative thinking. It’s great that it will be showcased in France,” says the co-author of the first model, which also went out into the world at the time – to a GTI rally near Wörthersee in Austria.
