Benzin, nebo elektro? Nabídneme to nejlepší
Škoda Auto slaví 130 let v době, kdy automobilový průmysl prochází dosud největší transformací. Jak firma tuto změnu zvládá, přiblížil předseda představenstva Klaus Zellmer v rozhovoru. V něm představil aktualizovanou Next Level Škoda Strategii a uvedl, jaká nabídka modelů zajistí budoucnost Škoda Auto.
Škoda doprovodila strhující show
Škoda Powers a Thrilling Race
The 112th edition of the Tour de France ended with the final stage finishing on the Champs-Élysées. The Škoda Design department once again created trophies for the overall champion, Tadej Pogačar, the winner of the points and mountain classifications, and the best young rider. Škoda was also the sponsor of the green jersey and the supplier of almost 220 electric cars for the organizers' needs.
Combustion or Electric – We Offer the Best
Škoda Auto is celebrating its 130th anniversary at a time when the automotive industry is undergoing its greatest transformation yet. . Klaus Zellmer, Chairman of the Board, explained how the company is handling this change in an interview. In it, he presented the updated Next Level Škoda Strategy and outlined the range of models that will secure Škoda Auto's future.
Paperless office
Since Škoda Auto launched this project, the total volume of printouts and paper forms has been declining. A large part has been digitized, and some have even been eliminated. Paper documents remain only where there is a legal requirement. And although the entire car manufacturer has been involved in the digitization process, there is still a long way to go before achieving a completely paperless office.
Cars from the Foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains
This regular column dedicated to the company's 130th anniversary and events that took place in August focused on the types of cars that the Vrchlabí plant produced before it was transformed into a gearbox factory. Did you know, for example, that it became the birthplace of countless commercial vehicle derivatives, including ambulances, or that luxury cars intended for export were produced there?
Elroq RS flexes its power
More than 200 journalists attended the presentation of the Škoda Elroq RS model. They tested it on the route from Václav Havel Airport to Břehyně near Lake Mácha and on the local Aurel track. This facility allows for testing on a variety of surfaces and in different driving conditions. The new Enyaq RS Race concept from Škoda Motorsport was also showcased on site.
All-wheel drives travel through Albania
A group of journalists and influencers set off on an adventurous trip through the Balkans in Octavia and Karoq cars with all-wheel drive. The Let’s Explore Albania event highlighted the advantages of these cars, which can handle even mountain terrain and gravel roads. Whilst camping, participants also tried out equipment from the Škoda E-Shop, including sleeping bags, blankets and outdoor cutlery.
„Čtyřkolky“ projely Albánii
Na dobrodružnou výpravu Balkánem se vydali vybraní novináři a influenceři ve vozech Octavia a Karoq s pohonem všech čtyř kol. Akce Let’s Explore Albania ukázala přednosti těchto vozů, které si poradí i s náročným horským terénem či dlouhými trasami po štěrkových cestách. Při kempování si účastníci vyzkoušeli také vybavení z nabídky Škoda E-Shopu – spacáky, deky či outdoorové nádobí.
It began with a single track
130 years ago, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement joined forces to manufacture bicycles. It wasn’t long before they fitted their bicycles with small engines. These single-track vehicles formed the foundations for Škoda Auto. And the carmaker hasn’t forgotten its roots, as it continues to support cycling at all levels, from amateur enthusiasts to the world’s most famous race, the Tour de France.
Superb student car heads to the Tour de France
The latest student car, designed by pupils at the Škoda Auto Vocational School under the supervision of practical training instructors and based on the Superb Combi iV model, commemorates the carmaker’s anniversary and its connection to cycling. The 10th concept has been named L&K 130 and takes the form of a support vehicle for cycling races. It is also set to appear at the Tour de France.
Začalo to jednou stopou
Před 130 lety se dali dohromady Václavové Laurin a Klement a pustili se do výroby jízdních kol. Netrvalo dlouho a bicykly opatřili motorovým pohonem.

Ride into the future
ENYAQ iV
Editorial
Dear colleagues,
the new all-electric ŠKODA ENYAQ iV is a very important model and means a lot to all of us. It highlights our values while demonstrating Škodians’ sense of precision, courage and talent. I am particularly proud of the car’s Simply Clever solutions – they are undoubtedly part of our brand’s DNA. The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV offers plenty of space, which comes in handy, especially for family use, as well as practical interior solutions and all-electric mobility in practice. When we had the dynamic drive event in Ireland with disguised prototypes, the journalists who attended were clearly excited and convinced that we are moving in the right direction, which reassured me that the design and overall uniqueness of our newest family member would attract a wide range of customers. This year is very special for us. We’re launching the brand’s key model, the new-generation ŠKODA OCTAVIA, including the OCTAVIA iV, which, along with the SUPERB iV, extends our portfolio of electrified models. In this respect, for the time being, the new ENYAQ is the absolute highlight on our way to achieving eMobility.
I am incredibly proud to be part of the ŠKODA AUTO family.
Christian Strube
▶ eMOBILITY
The main topic of ŠKODA Mobil’s August issue will reveal what the ENYAQ iV is bringing about inside the Mladá Boleslav plant and the brand’s dealerships and how the era of eMobility is entering the lives of the carmaker’s employees.

G32 – MEB model series
The perfect foundation
The perfect foundation
The ENYAQ iV is the first ŠKODA model produced on the VW Group’s modular MEB platform
Designed exclusively for purely electric cars, the MEB platform has a larger wheelbase and shorter body overhangs than those designed for VW Group’s cars with combustion engines. It provides a base for electric cars of various classes, including compact cars, limousines and SUVs. All of these provide exceptional comfort and have an airy interior and plenty of luggage space.
▶ MEB vehicles do not have a gearbox, fuel tank or exhaust system.
78 Ah
is the capacity of
one battery moduleBattery system
This is the key platform component supporting rapid charging. It consists of several different battery modules, depending on the required range. Each module houses 24 lithium-ion battery cells wrapped in outer foil. The modules have high shape flexibility, which is why they can be adapted to specific requirements.
MEB advantages
Stunning variability:
Many models of different classes will be produced on this platform, but the character of individual brands will be respected.
Extraordinary interior space:
The battery is located in the floor, and there is no central tunnel in the cars.
Different battery capacity versions:
Do you drive mainly for shopping, or do you often go on long-distance rides? The platform allows you to choose the battery best suited to your needs.
Fun behind the wheel:
Low centre of gravity and symmetrical weight distribution provide for a balanced and dynamic ride.
Inside the battery
Each lithium-ion battery cell consists of an anode, a cathode, a separator and an electrolyte. When charging, lithium ions migrate from the cathode to the anode, where they are stored. Electricity from the grid is transformed into chemical energy. When the electric engine is being used, the entire process is reversed: Lithium ions travel from the anode back to the cathode, converting chemical energy into electrical energy.
▶ The MEB platform vehicles’ engines are mounted directly on the axles.
▶ During the tests of the ENYAQ iV cars, we continued building on our experience gained from operating the already launched electrified SUPERB iV and CITIGOe iV. However, ENYAQ iV based on MEB platform comes with new functions related not only to the electric drivetrain. The tests include checking all the car’s functions. We’ve introduced online monitoring and evaluation so that, regarding the driving and functional tests, we can check the current status of the project at any time. We are using ENYAQ iV test cars in cooperation with other ŠKODA AUTO departments to verify related products. The customer charging infrastructure evaluation is one example of such cooperation.

▶ The ENYAQ iV traction batteries will have a capacity of 55 kWh, 62 kWh and 82 kWh.
▶ The batteries driving the ENYAQ iV weigh between 350 and 500 kilogrammes, depending on the selected capacity. They are being developed and produced by the VW Group and are indeed high-end batteries. Compared with other batteries that we know, like those from laptops, they have a different capacity and a long life and are exceptionally safe. A great driving experience for our customers.

Attractive and first-rate
Attractive and
first-rateWith its dynamic lines, distinctive front grille and numerous crystalline elements, the ENYAQ iV is eye-catching on the road
The car’s emotional body thrills customers with its graceful shapes. The side line represents the ŠKODA brand’s design philosophy, where form follows function. Yet this doesn’t just provide speed and dynamic qualities. The curves are thrilling thanks to the engaging play between light and shadow, with the car resembling a dynamic sculpture.
▶ The robust character
of the new SUV is underlined
by 18" or up to 21" wheels.Exceptional charisma
The upright front part of the model gives it a distinctive, powerful look. Thanks to the dramatically shaped shorter bonnet, the car has rather characteristic proportions that distinguish it from a regular car with an internal combustion engine.
The designers opted to use a new generation of hexagonal modules in the LED Matrix lights. They are more crystalline and have a sharper shape than their predecessors.
▶ The rear door bears the inscription ŠKODA.
Sporty
The vehicle is dominated by the ŠKODA brand’s typical vertically ribbed radiator grille, which emphasises the daytime running lights. The air intakes for battery cooling and air conditioning are framed by glossy elements on the bumper that make the car appear sporty.
Elegant rear section
The rear of the car looks clean and generous. The vehicle’s aerodynamics is among the best in its class and plays a central role in the car’s architecture. The side frame transitions seamlessly to the sharply cut crystalline tail lights. The new interpretation of the typical C-shape, together with decorative elements inside the lamps, evokes the impression of gems.
▶ The illuminated Crystal Face mask consists of 130 headlight LEDs shining with a friendly smile on future owners.
▶ The ENYAQ iV is the first car in the brand’s history to be decorated in its top version with an illuminated Crystal Face grille, giving the car an extraordinary look. I believe that we’ve created an excellent, very emotional and well-balanced car that will astonish everyone else on the road.

The interior of the eMobility flagship will feel like you’re in your own living room
Plenty of space for everyone
The MEB platform, which lacks a central tunnel, has given the ŠKODA Design team unprecedented freedom and enabled it to work with the interior in a unique way. The dashboard floats in the space above the centre console and has easily accessible controls. The horizontal and symmetrical cab concept underlines both the width and the airiness of this electric car.
A look into the future
Are we nearing the end of the steering-wheel era?
With a flat floor, the ENYAQ iV heralds a gradual change to cars’ interior layout. We can expect more displays, as well as augmented and virtual reality, to play an increasingly important role in our cars. The increase in autonomous driving will definitely transform the cars’ interior. Traditional control elements, like the steering wheel and pedals, are likely to disappear.
The interior designers opted for sustainable materials. The Lodge version pleasantly combines covers consisting of up to 40 percent wool and 60 percent recycled PET bottles. The Cognac-coloured leather that adorns the Eco-Suite seats (see picture) is made using an olive plant extract.
Thematic interior versions
Customers can choose from a wide range of interiors that vary in terms of the materials and designs used on the seats, dashboard, the centre console or doors. They are inspired by contemporary architecture, on which their names are also based: Loft, Lodge, Lounge, Suite, etc.
Interior offers an extraordinary spaciousness.
Each of these styles features a tasteful interior with a high feel-good factor.
▶ In addition to the box under the central armrest, passengers will certainly welcome the 11.4-litre storage space under the centre console.
▶ The interior of the ENYAQ iV model introduces several innovations. We’ve created entirely distinctive interior level concepts. For the first time, we’ve also used entirely new sustainable materials to design a unique decorative trim for the seats.

▶ Aerodynamics to increase the driving range. The vehicle’s air resistance coefficient of 0.27 is simply great. By comparison, the top OCTAVIA COMBI model reaches 0.26.
▶ The ENYAQ RS iV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. At the same time, it can handle a trailer weighing up to 1,400 kg.
Which version would suit you?
Don’t ‘fill it up’
Don’t ‘fill it up’
If you handle the battery properly, its capacity decreases only 1 to 2 percent per year
The distance travelled only has a slight effect on the lifespan of a modern battery. However, the recharging method and general handling are critical factors. Experts recommend that the batteries of modern electric cars remain charged between 20 and 80 percent. By contrast, parking a car with a discharged battery for a longer period of time makes it significantly less durable. When recharging, it is advisable to choose the slowest possible method while respecting the available time: Batteries are weakened by heat, which is also generated during charging. The faster the charging is, the more heat there is that needs to be dissipated. Thanks to the advanced ENYAQ iV features, battery care becomes easy. For example, the driver can set the charging speed and the required charge level or decrease the current amount in the car’s infotainment system.
Tips and tricks
▶ On a hot summer’s day, look for a charging location in the shade or in cooler underground garages
▶ Don’t leave the electric vehicle parked for several days
▶ Charge the entire capacity only ahead of a planned longer journey
▶ Try recharging when the capacity drops to about 20 percent
▶ Choose the slowest possible AC charging method
▶ Upon request, the ENYAQ iV comes with a heat pump that uses residual heat in the drive system to heat and air-condition the interior, thereby saving battery power.
How the electric motor works
The device converts electricity to mechanical energy using a fixed stator, which consists of coils, and a moving rotor. When electricity flows through the coils, a magnetic field is created in the stator, which then rotates the rotor. The ENYAQ iV’s rear axle is driven by a synchronous electric motor with permanent magnets in the rotor, which moves simultaneously and in the same direction as the stator magnetic field. The 4×4 version’s front axles have an additional asynchronous unit, where the alternating current passing through the stator coils creates a moving magnetic field that produces a current in the rotor and, as a result, its own magnetic field. This magnetic field is then trying to “catch up” with the stator field rotating the rotor with a small delay.
Energy-saving braking
Through recuperation, the energy generated when braking is stored in the high-voltage battery. The driver of the ENYAQ iV either uses the automatic mode or manually chooses between three recuperation levels. The higher the gear, the higher the braking force you achieve when releasing the accelerator pedal.
Factors that can increase the driving range include:
▶ Smooth driving
▶ Efficient use of recuperation
▶ Lower heating intensity and air-conditioning usee
▶ The electric motor efficiency exceeds 90 percent – double that of combustion units.
Why the gearbox is unnecessary
The powertrain provides full torque to electric cars right from the start, and the power increases as the speed increases. Therefore, purely electric cars do not require more gears as one is enough. The selected gear ratio determines both maximum speed and acceleration – the higher the ratio is, the better the car’s acceleration and the lower its maximum speed will be. The opposite is also true.
▶ In the top-of-the-range ENYAQ RS iV all-wheel-drive version, both electric motors provide a combined output of up to 225 kW. Consequently, drivers will have a lot of fun with the model.

Easily and comfortably
Drivers of the ENYAQ iV won’t have to change their habits too much. The iV ecosystem makes it possible to charge easily and comfortable both at home and on the road.
Trump card
The MyŠKODA Powerpass enables drivers to charge their cars all over Europe. Access to charging stations is provided by a card of the same name with an RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) chip. The user can manage their account in the MyŠKODA Powerpass app. A map with charging stations, price rates, charging history and invoices with monthly billing are also available there.
▶ The energy storage device reduces storage batteries’ carbon footprint by a half.
Energy on your journeys
Customers can easily find the nearest charging station either in the MyŠKODA Powerpass application or on the display inside their cars. They can use the card to recharge at:
▶ Regular charging stations, such as at shopping malls
▶ IONITY super-fast chargers on international transport routes and motorways
▶ Publicly accessible charging points in the ŠKODA sales network
143 000
charging stations across Europe can currently be used with the MyŠKODA Powerpass service
Second life of storage batteries
Public AC fast chargers with an output of 11 to 22 kW are becoming part of the services provided by the ŠKODA sales and service network. Operating them is easier with the ŠKODA iV power storage system, which utilises used batteries from EVs and plug-in hybrids. The useful and green solution, which lets you charge at night at a reduced rate and consume at peak times, brings dealers financial savings and ensures network stability.
PARAMETRY A BENEFITY
▶ Capacity: 200 kWh
▶ Composition: 4 BEV or 20 PHEV storage batteries
▶ Environmentally friendly
▶ Extends battery life
▶ Stores energy obtained from photovoltaics
▶ Improving the lithium-ion batteries will soon reduce charging times significantly.
A look into the future
Will inductive charging gain a foothold?
Experts have high hopes for this method of wireless charging that we know from mobile phones. The system uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two coils – parking spaces will be equipped with the transmitters and car chassis with the receivers. A parked electric car will slowly be recharged without its driver having to worry about it. Slow and smooth charging can also be provided by solar chargers on the car body. But first, it is important that solar cells become more efficient.
90 %
of its lifetime the car
is in idle stateFlywheel-driven storage
New technologies in the future may take the edge off the transmission system if charging stations become heavily loaded. For example, ŠKODA AUTO, in cooperation with PRE and Chakratec, has introduced the Kinetic Power Booster solution in which energy is stored by a flywheel able to release the energy with an output twice that of the local power grid’s capacity.
In the paradise of eMobility
California, the promised land of electric cars, boasts a very dense charging infrastructure. Almost 40 million people live in the state, which covers 424,000 km2 and has over 25,000 public charging stations (with voltages of 240 V and higher). It is often only a few kilometres from one charger to another, even in more remote locations. The stations are on the edge of the parking lots of virtually all shopping centres, which are found all across the state. Around 10 percent of fast-charging stations are located there.
Home solutions
Charging their cars in their own garages is what many customers prefer to do. However, it takes several hours when using standard power sockets. A solution may be the so-called wallboxes or the ŠKODA iV Charger on the wall with an integrated cable enabling a connection to the car. The three-phase devices provide alternating current (AC) and have a maximum output of 11 kW. A single-phase version with a maximum output of 7.4 kW will be available in selected markets. It comes with a 4.5- or 7.5-metre Type 2 charging cable, which is what the European carmakers use.
Interested customers can choose one of three options:
▶ ŠKODA iV
Charger:
Basic version for undemanding customers who want to drive to the wallbox, connect their car and start charging right away.
▶ ŠKODA iV
CHARGER CONNECT:
The smart charger with RFID reader may be used only by authorised card holders and is, therefore, suitable for shared garages, among others. The user connects to it via Wi-Fi and LAN and controls the process through an application.
▶ ŠKODA iV
Charger Connect+:
It also contains an electricity meter, which enables you to divide the billing for energy between private and company cars – something that business customers will welcome. The LTE module allows connection to the wallbox via mobile Internet.
▶ The ŠKODA iV Charger Connect+ has its own electricity meter.
▶ Anyone who is interested should visit a ŠKODA dealership. Their parking conditions will be assessed there, and they will be advised on which wallbox to select. At their dealers, customers place an order for the ŠKODA iV Charger, infrastructure check and installation. The complexity is determined by having a certified installation partner inspect the installation site – the so-called Home Check. Someone will only need to have an existing socket modified and the wallbox installed; another customer will need to have a new line from the main switchboard laid.

A look into the future
Virtual reality has a future
The technology that complements the real picture of the world with computer-generated objects and is used by the modern head-up display of the ENYAQ iV model is widely used in various areas. At ŠKODA AUTO, it is used in in the form of video mapping in Production and Logistics, as well as in car development. It may help drivers in the future in case of an emergency (it can advise on how to replace defective fuses or a damaged tyre, etc.).
▶ Carmakers are experimenting with placing solar panels on car bodies.

Thoughtful connection
Thoughtful Connection
The ENYAQ iV gets along perfectly with the driver. Advanced connectivity helps with the unprecedented teamwork between human and machine.
Through voice, touch and gestures
The latest-generation infotainment system provides the crew with useful information. The car’s communication centre is a separate 13" touch screen that can also be controlled with gestures and the voice assistant, Laura. Driving information can be looked up in the upgraded 5.3" Digital Cockpit, which offers four different displays and simplified control via the multi-functional steering wheel.
▶ The ŠKODA Connect application interface is identical to the 13" dashboard display graphics.
Mobile master key
Bank card, tram pass, home keys – these are just some of the new features that smart mobile devices have been taking over lately. They are also playing an increasingly crucial role in communication with the car. The updated version of ŠKODA Connect has merged the functions of the existing Connect App and ŠKODA OneApp applications into one, enriching them with new ones tailored to the needs of eMobility. The driver can use their mobile phone or smart watch to remotely control the process of battery charging and the air conditioning settings or to lock and unlock the car. All the important driving data can be found in the app. The driver can also communicate with their repair shop.
In the thick of it
The electric car offers completely new aspects of travelling. A permanent Internet connection via the integrated eSIM card makes your journey more pleasant thanks to a number of online functions. Navigation uses the latest traffic information, and the driver has an overview of the nearest charging stations, road closures, weather conditions and what is happening around the world. The other passengers in the car can connect to Wi-Fi and have fun during the drive, watching a favourite TV series or playing their favourite games or songs.
A look into the future
5G makes autonomous driving possible
Experts predict that the fifth generation of wireless Internet will change many areas of human life. Its benefits are speed, spectrum expansion allowing more devices to be connected to the Internet and, especially, lightning-fast signal response. The latter is key to the operation of driverless cars. When we download e-mails or browse the web, it matters very little that the response takes a few seconds. When two self-driving cars are approaching a junction, however, they have to quickly evaluate which one has to give way.
▶ The ENYAQ iV provides a number of new technical solutions and related tasks for the Purchasing department. As examples, I would include new lighting concepts, environmentally focused materials, smart solutions in charging and providing capacity for battery components.

Safe and comfy
Safe and comfy
The ENYAQ iV guarantees its drivers and passengers exceptional safety and comfort, as well as new Simply Clever solutions.
The latest safety and assistance systems for the electric SUV automatically warn of possible collisions with other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and fixed obstacles and, ideally, can prevent or minimise the consequences of an accident.
Still in sight
The new head-up display divides useful information into two parts in the driver’s fields of vision. The current speed, recognised traffic signs and information from the assistance systems are displayed on the windscreen. Navigation instructions, data from driving assistants and traffic warnings are projected through augmented reality onto the road in front of the vehicle. Controlling the vehicle is more comfortable, and the driving is safer.
▶ Up to nine airbags protect the crew in the event of a collision.
Considerate of the more vulnerable
The ENYAQ iV is the first ŠKODA car to have the new assistant that alerts pedestrians behind the vehicle when reversing or leaving a parking space. Collision Avoidance Assist also helps the driver to prevent an imminent collision with a pedestrian, cyclist or another vehicle by increasing torque and using controlled avoidance. The Exit Warning that sounds when getting out of the car alerts the driver to an oncoming vehicle or cyclist when the door is opened.
Simply Clever iV
eMobility brings new questions to the drivers’ everyday lives. Where do I put the charging cable? How do I keep my hands clean when handling it? The answer comes in the form of new Simply Clever solutions. The protective cap for the charging socket and cable cleaner prevent you from getting dirty. The owner conveniently stores the cable in a compartment located under the boot floor after the car has been charged.
▶ Full LED Matrix headlamps make it possible to drive with high-beams without blinding other road users.
▶ From the Quality department’s point of view, the capacity to respond to the ever-changing parameters of a project has proved to be the new model’s essential element. They are based on the so-called “function list”, which defines what the car “can do” – from direction indicators to safety functions. It was the unstable conditions that we and our colleagues from other departments had to deal with when developing the ENYAQ iV. Thanks to the E-Meisterbock* project, we can detect and address these situations immediately.

Easier Parking
A good many drivers will whoop with delight at the extended parking functions of Park Assist. Remote-controlled parking enables the driver to control their ENYAQ iV from a distance of 5 metres via a smartphone with the ŠKODA Connect app and to complete a parking manoeuvre under complicated conditions so that the car is parked straight. Trained parking can save the routes for up to the five most frequently used parking spaces. Next time, the EV will park by itself and brake automatically.
Peace on the roads
New elements of the ENYAQ iV can help to reduce accidents on Czech roads. Advanced safety assistant systems, the Laura voice control and virtual data projection all reduce human error rates. Drivers who are not fully engaged when driving are the most common cause of road accidents. In 2019, a total of 17,623 collisions on our roads occurred for this reason and cost 60 human lives. Smart sensors prevent collisions with people moving on the road on bike or on foot. Last year, 36 cyclists and 85 pedestrians died due to collisions with cars.
A look into the future
Technology of tomorrow
In the future, augmented reality (AR) will likely play a big role in many industries, including the car sector. The connection of AR systems with maps is being considered, so when travelling you will see, for example, information about the surrounding tourist attractions or options for accommodation and refreshment.
