  • Editorial

    Dear Readers

Over the past two months, we have introduced the new generations of the Škoda Kodiaq and Škoda Superb cars, both of which are pivotal for our brand. The fourth-generation Superb builds on its predecessor’s strengths and offers a more sophisticated design, increased space and comfort and the latest technology. The new model range, featuring seven design choices, includes many environmentally friendly solutions, such as headlining made from 100% sustainable materials. With the new Kodiaq, we are taking eco-friendliness and effectiveness to the next level. For the first time, we are also offering a plug-in hybrid version with an electric range of more than 100 kilometres. Both cars come equipped with our innovative Škoda Smart Dials controls. The new interior concept, which includes a free-standing 13-inch infotainment screen, ensures even easier operation.

I am confident that the timing for both cars is perfect and that they will be very successful.

    Kodiaq

    Heir to the throne

The new Kodiaq will offer customers a blend of proven values and modern technologies, including a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

After its launch in 2016, the first-generation Kodiaq immediately won over many customers and quickly became the popular “bear” – the brand’s best-selling SUV. The car’s phenomenal success inspired the Škoda team as they embarked on strategic preparations for the second generation in 2018. “We focused on values that set our brand apart from the competition: everyday usability, spaciousness and value for money. In addition, we aimed to provide our customers with new technologies, an even higher level of comfort and quality materials,” reflects Vít Brožík, Project Manager of the G23 – Model Line A+SUV, B.

Our customers cherish traditional values while seeking new experiences and technologies to satisfy their curiosity. We refer to them as “Everyday explorers”. The car will attract them with numerous new features, such as the high-tech Matrix-LED headlights and the illuminated front grille.

    Balanced car

The Kodiaq is set to successfully build on its predecessor’s legacy, according to Škoda employees who have been preparing the second generation of the top Czech SUV for the past six years. “The new model’s strength lies in its comprehensiveness and balance. It seamlessly combines a successful exterior and interior design, exceptional craftsmanship, spaciousness, comfort and modern yet user-friendly car function controls,” assert Vít Brožík, Project Manager, G23 – Model line A+SUV, B, and Adam Rückl, Project Manager, G2G – PL Complete Car Compact.

The boot capacity has increased to 910 litres, expanding to 2,105 litres with the seats folded down.

    Great team

The project for the new generation got underway in mid-2019. All the departments involved faced ambitious financial goals. For example, Technical Development introduced new virtual development methods, significantly reducing the number of pre-production test cars. “Some technical solutions seemed unfeasible, yet we achieved the desired results through collective effort,” notes A. Rückl. “An unexpected feature was the new cross-stitching in the interior, the so-called X-stitching,” adds V. Brožík.

Although the Kodiaq shares the MQB Evo platform and other synergies with the Volkswagen Tiguan, we have developed several specific solutions that embody the Škoda brand’s values. One such feature is a Phone Box for simultaneous inductive fast charging of two phones, complete with a cooling function.

    Car for active families

The Kodiaq is targeted at active families seeking a reliable car for everyday driving. They value a spacious, practical and safe car with an attractive design and high-quality materials. The new Kodiaq delivers exactly that. Customer will love its look, Simply Clever features, spacious interior and exceptional crew safety. “We will make it easier for our customers to choose their car. We have reduced the number of exceptional trims and introduced a new structure of 13 packages,” explains Andrea Pfeiferová, Kodiaq Product Marketing, VP2 – Product Marketing SUV.

  • Kodiaq technika

    Kodiaq

Safer, more advanced and plugged in

The new Kodiaq boasts eco-friendly powertrains, innovative technologies and features that take the car to an even higher level.

100 km on a single charge

The second-generation model also introduces a plug-in hybrid version. Its powertrain includes a 1.5 TSI 150 kW (204 hp) engine. The new high-voltage battery provides over 100 km of pure electric range in the WLTP mode. Charging up to 11 kW of power and 50 kW at quick DC charging locations ensures quick battery recharging at home or on the go. The car also features brake energy recovery. Despite its big battery, the plug-in hybrid maintains a generous boot volume of 745 litres.

For the first time in this model series, we are offering variants with plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid powertrains, dual-valve adaptive shock absorbers and seats with a pneumatic massage function – features previously exclusive to premium manufacturers. Notably, our sound system includes up to 14 speakers, matching the number offered by the Porsche Taycan.

    Adam Rückl

Project manager, G2G – PL Complete Car Compact

    Safety guards

The new assistance systems take driver and passenger safety and comfort to the next level. For example, the Turn Assist warns and, if necessary, brakes the car if it detects an oncoming vehicle during a left turn. In addition, the Exit Warning alerts with a sound and a visual symbol in the exterior rear-view mirror when another car approaches from behind.

    Wide range of sustainable powertrains

All engines in the second-generation Kodiaq model meet the Euro 6e emissions standard and operate smoothly. The plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid powertrains are from the new generation of EA 211 evo2 engines. They function in the economical Miller cycle, where the intake valves close earlier, combined with a high compression ratio and supercharging. This results in reduced fuel consumption and emissions, among other benefits.

The second-generation Kodiaq can be equipped with the new DCC Plus adaptive chassis. The shock absorbers, with two independently controlled valves, separate the rebound and compression stages of the suspension. This results in a quicker response, improved driving dynamics and enhanced comfort for both drivers and passengers.

    Excellent aerodynamics

Significant aerodynamic improvements include the installation of active radiator louvres, optimised air management for engine and brake cooling, aerodynamically shaped exterior mirrors, new front and rear bumper designs, aerodynamic wheels, an extended fifth door spoiler and integrated longitudinal roof rails. The air drag coefficient has been reduced to cx = 0.282, closely approaching the Enyaq iV’s top performance (cx = 0.257).

The Kodiaq Sportline is available with all the powertrains offered in the Kodiaq model range.

    Kodiaq Sportline

The top model of Škoda’s second-generation SUV features numerous elements in gloss black, including the D-pillar. Both front and rear bumpers, as well as side sills, are painted in the body colour. It sports specific 19“ anthracite alloy wheels with a polished finish. The interior is dominated by black paint, complemented by decorative elements with a metallic appearance. The extensive standard equipment of the Kodiaq Sportline model includes Matrix-LED headlights with a welcome effect, Corner function and Top LED taillights.

Customers can choose from two non-metallic shades and seven metallic colours, including the new Bronx Gold.

    Innovative space

The interior of the new Kodiaq is cosy and brims with clever solutions.

The new look of the Kodiaq and Superb interiors follows the modern design showcased by the Enyaq electric SUV. These car interiors exude elegance and feature impeccable craftsmanship in every detail. At first glance, the completely new controls in both cars are striking. The dashboard is dominated by a 13“ central infotainment screen, beneath which there are three new multi-function controls (Smart Dials) that provide quick access to a range of vehicle functions.

Previously, chemical products were used to tan leather for car interiors, but we have replaced them with bio-based components. In the new Kodiaq, these include coffee husks ground into powder, a byproduct of coffee production that was often burned in the past.

    Sustainable elegance

Inside the car, ambient lighting and the unique Dark Chrome shade on all glossy surfaces create a pleasant atmosphere. Customers can choose from four interior design options for the Kodiaq. Eco-friendly materials play an important role in them, with all textiles, including carpets and headliners, made from recycled PET bottles. The leathers used are sustainably tanned, employing methods such as using coffee bean leftovers.

    Smart console

Relocating the gear selector and handbrake beneath the steering wheel has freed up space in the centre console for new Simply Clever solutions. The Kodiaq features two cooled wireless charging bays, which enhances mobile phone charging speed and battery life by preventing overheating. The centre console also houses a handy active display cleaner with liquid to remove dirt and a special glass wipe. Both driver and front passenger will appreciate the variable, movable cup holder design. Additional Simply Clever features include a storage box on the centre tunnel in front of the sliding rear seat bench, which allows rearward and forward adjustments.

    6 cm

The new Kodiaq has grown by 6 centimetres, offering ample room for the crew.

  • Kodiaq výroba

    Kodiaq

    Can it be manufactured?

The EDI – Design Interior, Colour and Trim department is part of the Feasibility workplace. Its members ensure that the proposed designs are manufacturable, meet all design requirements and are assembly-ready. Jan Dědek (top left in the photo) explained to us the journey of the Kodiaq and Superb interiors to their serial production.

What exactly is your responsibility and who do you collaborate with at the carmaker?

The Feasibility Designer monitors the creation of design proposals from the beginning to understand the intentions of colleagues in terms of the placement of individual elements, surfaces and materials. Our small team actively joins the process when the EBS – Strak and visualisation department creates surface data or virtual 3D models of user-relevant surfaces for prototypes, known as Strak data. EBS coordinates the requirements of design and technology, a collaboration that continues until the final data is approved for production cars. We work with EKI – Development Vehicle Interior on seat and boot design and with EKC – Development Cockpit and Air Conditioning on the dashboard, consoles and other elements. In preparation for serial production, we cooperate with departments like GQ – Quality Management, as well as individual part suppliers.

Which proposed innovations were the most difficult to bring to serial production and why?

Nowadays, almost every part presents challenges, partly due to the great pressure on pricing. For example, we aimed to make the blowers in the new-generation Superb as inconspicuous as possible. We managed to do that thanks to a new solution from our engineers, and the result is impressive. A big challenge with the Kodiaq was incorporating the decorative X-shaped stitching on the dashboard and doors.

Which of the new clever solutions are drivers most excited about?

Both cars feature numerous clever innovations. Drivers will particularly appreciate the display cleaner, which is very handy in the era of touch screens. At the same time, I am also fond of details like the QR code in the boot, which links to video tutorials on how to properly use the car’s gadgets.

    Superb

    Confident flagship

The new Superb stands out thanks to its timeless design and numerous practical innovations.

Work on the fourth-generation Superb began in 2019, and a series of strategic discussions and decisions have shaped its development. The project’s goals were ambitious. “Building on the success of previous Superb generations was and remains a challenging task, especially in a market where some customers are transitioning from traditional segments to SUV models,” explains Jakub Musil, Project Manager of G24 – Model Series B. “I’m glad that, unlike most of our competitors, we’ve managed to retain both the large Combi estate and the hatchback saloon in our offering. I see this as a great opportunity,” adds J. Musil. The team focused on enhancing customer value in design, material quality and overall value. The car is built on the improved MQB Evo platform, which meets new legislative standards and increased safety requirements. The car’s innovative technologies lead to more economical operation, reduced emissions and a more user-friendly environment.

The new Superb retains all the key features of its predecessors and takes them further. It introduces innovative solutions such as a plug-in hybrid drive with a range of over 100 km and fast charging, all wrapped in a new self-assured design. I am confident that it will strike a chord with both traditional and new customers.

    G24 – Model B Series

The car’s interior is dominated by a free-standing 13-inch infotainment screen.

    Practical and comfortable elegance

The Superb is renowned for its elegance and timeless design. It has long been popular among customers seeking practicality, space, safety and comfort, whether for large companies or families. “The new generation offers more seating space and increased boot capacity, which customers will appreciate. In terms of safety, the car is also equipped with new assistance systems and an increased number of airbags,” explains Jana Eliášová, Specialist Market Analysis at VP3 – Product Marketing Compact A/Midsize. Comfort is guaranteed by ergonomic, back-friendly seats with 10 pneumatically operated massage bags. In this new generation, customers can also look forward to new Simply Clever features, including mobile phone pockets on the front seatbacks.

The joint development with the VW Passat introduced processes previously unutilised or minimally used at Škoda Auto. We also had to accommodate different processes from Technical Development at Volkswagen and Škoda Auto, other Quality processes and the specific requirements of the VW production plant in Bratislava.

    New experience

Škoda Auto was tasked with preparing the new generation of the Volkswagen Passat alongside the Superb. The joint development and purchasing for both cars brought increased demands for the harmonisation of processes and requirements of both brands. “The biggest challenge was ensuring sufficient differentiation between the two models, which target different customers, while maintaining a high number of common parts,” states Michal Vácha, Project Manager G2D – PL Complete Car Midsize. “From my perspective, the joint project brought new experiences and insights into car development for the entire team,” adds M. Vácha.

The car’s elegant silhouette contributes to superior aerodynamics.

    Improved aerodynamics

Škoda Auto has significantly reduced air resistance in both body versions. Aerodynamics improved by 10% (cx = 0.23) in the hatchback saloon and by up to 15% (cx = 0.25) in the Combi estate, surpassing the current-generation Octavia model! Enhancements like the bevelled windscreen slope, redesigned exterior mirrors, A-pillars with rain deflectors, front bumper with air ducts, optimised wheels and electrically operated active shutters behind the front bumper’s air intake contributed to these improvements.

I believe the Smart Dials multi-function controls will be a big hit with our customers. The new Simply Clever features, such as the removable glasses holder, display cleaner and the multifunction pocket under the boot lid, will also undoubtedly catch their attention.

Several intelligent safety systems make their debut in the Superb model range, also featured in the new Kodiaq. The Turn Assist warns and can brake autonomously if a car approaches from the opposite direction during a left turn. The Emergency Steering Assist helps the driver by actively increasing steering torque during sudden evasive manoeuvres. Crossroad Assist uses radar sensors and a front camera to warn of pedestrians, vehicles or cyclists crossing at intersections.

    Simply Clever sustainability

The distinctive umbrella in the door compartment is a highlight and is now made from 100% sustainable materials. The umbrella cover and case are made from PET bottles, while the plastic parts use Trifilon Switch® plastic, primarily derived from agricultural products and plant fibres. The impregnation used, which is now free of PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals), is environmentally friendly.

Almost two years have passed since the initial idea of a sustainable umbrella. During this time, we have collaborated with our partner Doppler, our supplier since 2001, to optimise the final product. At the same time, our quality requirements for this product were verified through stress and material tests with help from our colleagues at Technical Development and Quality Management.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2001, Škoda unveiled its nearly 5-metre-long sedan. The front-wheel-drive car was offered with three petrol and two diesel engines. The first modern Škoda Superb also introduced several safety features to the Czech brand’s lineup, including an ASR anti-skid system, EDS electronic differential lock and ESP stabilisation.

    2nd generation

    2008–2015

The Superb II transitioned to a front-engined platform from the previous longitudinal layout. Customers could opt for a 4×4 drive with the Haldex vane clutch. The Hatchback saloon featured an innovative Twindoor fifth-door opening. About a year later, the Combi estate body variant was introduced, the first Škoda to be equipped with the Kessy keyless entry system.

    3rd generation

    2015–2023

The Superb III introduced a design revolution to the brand. The crystalline appearance of the flagship captivated both professionals and the general public. Škoda premiered features likes the DCC adaptive chassis, tri-zone air conditioning, independent heating and a heated windscreen. The driver benefits from the Park Assist driving assistant with independent parking and departure function.

Cars for the head of state

The Superb has been the official car of Czech presidents for 20 years. A specially modified car of the first generation was received by President Václav Klaus in 2003, while Miloš Zeman used the hatchback saloons of the subsequent two generations.
