  Dear readers,

  The ŠKODA OCTAVIA, the brand’s most

  important model, has been driving us

  for 60 years. It became a symbol of the

  carmaker’s success after its entry into

  the VW Group and helped to establish

  the brand on the international market.

  We wondered about the strengths of

  the individual generations of the brand’s

  bestselling car and wanted to map why

  this model is so important to employees.

  You have provided the answers and,

  therefore, you have been the main creators

  of this supplement’s content. The photos

  and stories that you sent us show how

  the OCTAVIA plays an important role in

  your life. They also confirm that all of

  its lines have always been technically

  mature, extremely practical, versatile,

  safe, elegant and, above all, well-made,

  and they are still on the road today. With

  its fourth generation, the OCTAVIA is

  entering its seventh decade of existence.

  It will undoubtedly be as successful as its

  predecessor. The craftsmanship and the

  passion for technology of all the ŠKODA

  employees who helped to bring it into the

  world are simply in its genes. We would

  like to thank all the employees who helped

  us to prepare this supplement, and we

  At the beginning of 1959, there was ahectic atmosphere at the former AZNP plant in

  Mladá Boleslav. The proven ŠKODA 440 and 445 “Spartak” models mingled with the

  new design, the OCTAVIA/OCTAVIA SUPER line, on the production line. In addition to

  amodified body, the OCTAVIA family car also flaunted an improved chassis. The front axle

  was dampened by maintenance-free coil springs supplemented by atorsion stabiliser,

  instead of across-mounted elliptical leaf spring. The management considered this

  innovation so revolutionary that it chose to abandon the existing numerical designation

  and introduce the model under anew word designation: OCTAVIA.

  Eighth

  OCTAVIA refers to the Latin term octo,

  eight. It was the eighth model of the

  brand created after the Second World

  War and also the eighth generation

  of the developmental series with the

  backbone chassis, which had started

  with the POPULAR.

  Our Grandfathers’

  Pride

  Practical

  In September 1960, the OCTAVIA COMBI version had its

  premiere at the Brno Trade Fair. When the horizontally

  divided double-leaf door was opened, the lower part

  extended the loading area of the luggage compartment

  and facilitated loading and unloading. Ardent travellers

  appreciated the foldable seats oered by the facelift in

  1961: The folded front seats continued to the rear seat

  cushions, and, when removed, the rear backrests served as

  bolsters for sleeping.

  Elegant and Progressive

  During the 1961 facelift, the gear shift lever

  moved from under the steering wheel

  to the floor. The change brought more

  accurate and faster shifting. The designers

  made the model more attractive by raising

  the rear fenders, ending with teardrop-type

  compound lamps.

  Simply Clever

  The carmaker was thinking

  of its customers even when

  there were waiting lists

  several years long. The spare

  wheel was located under the

  boot floor in acompartment

  with aseparate lid and,

  therefore, the crew did not

  have to deal with the luggage

  in the event of aflat tyre.

  On 1August1959, after ashortened

  morning shift, the automaker’semployees

  said goodbye to the experienced First

  Republic traveller, František Alexander

  Elstner. In the Stalin era, following his

  expeditions to foreign countries, he

  “rested” by being deployed to help

  with the construction of the Slapy

  Reservoir, but during the subsequent

  period of real socialism, he set out with

  ared-and-white OCTAVIA model to

  explore the USSR. The car did not fail

  him on the 14,000-km route, and he

  shared the comfort of the interior with an

  Inturist Travel Agency guide. Actually, it

  was more awatchwoman whose primary

  concern was that visitors to the land of

  unlimited possibilities saw only what they

  were allowed to see and did not speak to

  unauthorised individuals.

  The OCTAVIA also excelled as aracing

  car. First in 1960 at the 2,500-km

  Rally Vltava, but also on the track of

  “For Peace and Friendship”, the most

  prestigious Eastern Bloc race and

  twice as long, where its crew finished

  first. The car had to face even bigger

  competition at the Monte Carlo

  Rally, but nonetheless, it achieved

  impressivethree wins in arow in the

  Under 1,300cm

  The beginning of September marked the sixth

  year of ŠKODA employees driving their oldtimers

  in the ŠKODA Classic Tour 2019. Among others,

  four OCTAVIA oldtimer crews took part, informally

  celebrating the 60th anniversary of this flagship

  model’smarket launch. After crossing the finish

  line of the 100th rally, the participants shared afew

  thoughts about their cars.

  My First Historic Car

  For Martin Kvaizar of EKR/2, his blue 1962

  OCTAVIA is one of many historic cars in

  his possession. However, it was the first

  and, therefore, he pampers it very much.

  “Ibought the car in 2004, shortly after Igot

  my driver’slicense,” he says. He is the third

  owner and does most of the work on the car at

  home with his father. It is one of the cars that

  he continuously maintains. “In the first year,

  we had to fix the steering, brakes, chassis and

  paint.” Today, his OCTAVIA is reliable, and he

  drives approximately 1,000 kilometres ayear

  with it. “Once, Iused it to tow afriend for about

  100kilometres because his ŠKODA 100 had

  broken down,” Kvaizar said in praise of his car.

  Their Love

  It Brought Me Home

  from the Maternity

  Hospital

  Jiří Hambálek from PSZ/32 (on the right) arrived to the

  race with his 1962 OCTAVIA SUPER, which is afamily

  jewel. “Igot this car from my parents. It was their first

  vehicle, and they actually used it to bring me home from

  the maternity hospital.” They had continuously cared

  for this car and, therefore, it remained in its original

  condition, aside from getting anew paint job about

  15 years ago. “Until 1996, it was my family car,” the

  owner admits. “The car has about 260,000 kilometres

  on it, and the engine has not been overhauled,” he adds.

  Every year, the Hambáleks and the car take part in three

  or four historic car competitions, and they take care of

  it at home by themselves.

  It Gave Me Back

  My Childhood

  The white 1961 OCTAVIA is called

  Bělinka, and the owner, Stanislav

  Melichar Sr., kind of returned to

  his childhood with her. “My father

  had asimilar one,” he explains. He

  got the car five years ago while it

  was undergoing renovation. “The

  previous owner gave the car anew

  paint job. We have had it since 2013,

  and since then, we have continued

  the mechanical part of renovations

  every year,” Melichar says. “Dad

  always shows o to the whole family

  what’snew about the car. We also

  drive it at other times, not only during

  the ŠKODA Classic Tour. For example,

  it took our family friend to her

  wedding and became the subject of

  aphoto shoot for acalendar,” adds his

  son, Stanislav Melichar Jr., from PPS-2.

  It Belonged to

  Only Four Owners

  “Iarrived with acar that belonged to

  my friend, Jan Drbohlav from FIV,”

  says Marcela Krišková from EEK.

  This OCTAVIA dates back to 1960,

  and according to its roadworthiness

  certificate, for the first four years it

  probably served directly in the car

  factory, since the car was not registered

  until 1964. It has had four owners. The

  first was amodeller from Prague. After

  that, the car belonged to aprofessional

  soldier, also from Prague, until his

  death in 2003. “In 2009, our friend, an

  orthopaedic surgeon, began to rescue

  the car, and we acquired it from him in

  2015, after two years of persuasion,”

  she describes. The car then underwent

  acomplete renovation, and this year, it

  passed the ŠKODA Classic Tour finish

  line for the third time.

  Work began on the lower middle-class model in 1992, not long after the Czech carmaker

  joined the VW Group. Initial studies had been based on the third-generation Volkswagen Golf

  before adecision was made to change course. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA also had to succeed

  in developed world markets. The state-of-the-art technologies and the use of the new A4

  Group platform, which would later appear in the Golf IV or Audi A3, helped the creators to

  develop an extraordinary car with adistinct family-car character. And customers responded

  to the comfortable chassis alignment, spacious interior, rich standard trim, advanced safety

  features, cutting edge workmanship and aordable price. Their unprecedented interest soon

  dispelled concerns about whether ahuge investment in the vehicle development and plant

  modernisation would pay o. In 1996, the second model line (next to the modern FELICIA)

  put the carmaker on its second leg.

  Braeckel contributed to the

  designed for the first time using

  Eective and for People

  The first OCTAVIA rolled o the production line on 3 September

  1996. The moment of celebration was preceded by the intensive

  transformation of the Mladá Boleslav plant into one of the most modern

  car factories in Europe. Our contractors acquired premises for their own

  production facilities within the plant, which led to increased quality. The

  material started to be supplied just in time, reducing storage costs and

  increasing productivity. The new M13 assembly hall ensured apleasant

  environment for our employees, and large glazed areas provide plenty of

  natural light. Placing the management oces next to the assembly lines

  simplified communication and accelerated decision-making processes.

  New Work System

  The so-called modular production brought greater

  eciency and cost savings. For the first time, the body

  skeletons were moving on an adjustable mounting

  plate, and the entire modules (such as doors, axles,

  seats, or engines) that were assembled o the line

  were installed in precisely defined locations. The

  car’sassembly time decreased from hours to tens of

  minutes.

  Green Paint Shop

  The OCTAVIA obtained its precise body finish in an

  environmentally friendly Paint Shop opened in March

  1996. Thanks to its modern trim and the exclusive

  use of water-soluble paints, it produced the lowest

  emission levels in the world at the time.

  In 1995, Ihad been working as ayoung designer

  in the Design of Serial Stamping Tools department

  for only two years. One of the tasks assigned to

  me by my supervisor, Ing. Otto Kučera, was the

  construction of the pulling tool for the production

  of the side part of the OCTAVIA COMBI. The

  outer side is the core moulding of each car’sbody.

  It is dicult to manufacture in terms of both

  dimensions and the complexity of the design of

  the moulding process, including the tool design.

  Moreover, such acomplex part had never been

  produced in the car factory before. Nevertheless,

  in cooperation with the outstanding designer

  Josef Ulrych, aunique pulling tool was created.

  With its weight of over 60 tonnes, it was the

  heaviest not only in our plant but probably also in

  Europe. It was necessary to purchase the largest

  and most powerful hydraulic press in the Group

  for its incorporation before serial production

  started. The completion of this demanding task

  was finished with the celebratory stamping of

  the first part of the side, which was attended by

  representatives of our government, along with the

  Group management. To this day, Istill remember

  thisfunny story: the government security detail

  refused to believe that ahardly 25-year-old

  boy could be the designer of this complicated

  “monster” and refused to let me participate in this

  big moment. After 25 years, it is still nice to see

  the result of ajoint eort of all who contributed

  to the emergence of this legend with enthusiasm,

  dedication and diligence. Indeed, until recently,

  Iowned one of the first OCTAVIA COMBI cars with

  a2.0 MPI engine.

  In 1993, Istarted working in the Spare Parts

  Sales department, and after ayear, Itransferred

  to the Central Planning department, where we

  were in charge of production control systems.

  We had planned and prepared the OCTAVIA

  production control system for the new plant

  that was being built at that time. The big change

  was that acar was produced only after an order

  had been placed by acustomer. The systems

  processed orders, ensured their timing on the

  production schedule and monitored the course

  of production. When the final product was

  created, the technical certificates and sales

  documents were printed. We were taking over

  the Group FIS system, and once the production

  of the OCTAVIA models started, we used it in

  the production of FELICIA models as well. Ilove

  to think back to that time Ilearnt alot of new

  things that Iwould apply in ŠKODA AUTO later

  on. My father still owns the first-generation

  OCTAVIA, which is in perfect condition despite

  one post-accident repair.

  When Iwas designing the OCTAVIA, Iwent to

  Wolfsburg with my colleagues for two years.

  Ihad worked in the Body Design department

  and learnt acompletely new surfacing

  technology there, the so-called Strak. In the

  past, everything was drawn by hand on boards,

  and at that time, the foundations for computer

  methods, which are still used today, were being

  created. At Volkswagen, they shared with me

  their experience on how to create the bodywork

  on acomputer before milling the so-called data

  control model. The whole process meant great

  technological progress and aleap forward.

  Ihave used OCTAVIAs for business and have

  always enjoyed driving them. They have areally

  timeless design.

  decades. We asked several users about their car and their

  satisfaction with it.

  Ageless Car

  that is Staying

  IWould Not Change It

  for Anything

  Ihave one of the last first-generation models of

  OCTAVIA produced at the Vrchlabí plant in 2010.

  It is really precious – it is simple and brilliantly

  made. Cars of this generation can drive over

  amillion kilometres. The diesel cars from that

  time have been immortal, and any workshop

  would confirm that it is agood idea to stick to

  such acar. Iam happy with it and glad to have it.

  Iwouldn’t change it for anything.

  Reliable Car

  Iown the first-generation

  OCTAVIA from 2002. However,

  Iam not the first owner: Ionly

  acquired it three years ago.

  Ibought the car after acrash

  and changed the right side of the

  body and the shock absorber. It

  is reliable, and there is no need

  to worry about anything. Ijust

  keep refuelling and changing oil.

  Previously, Iowned other brands,

  and Iwas always under the car,

  repairing something. Ican’t be

  happier with my OCTAVIA. It

  always drives me reliably from

  point Ato point B. It is aCzech

  legend.

  Iown the first-generation

  OCTAVIA RS in the yellow

  canary colour. It was 2012, and

  Ibrought anice piece from

  Germany with 100,000 km

  from the time with its first

  owner. Today, it has almost

  twice the mileage, and it really is

  an incredibly reliable car with an

  ever-strong engine and ageless

  design. Iparticipated in several

  meetings and orientation drives

  and took home several cups. To

  celebrate 25 years of merging

  with VW, my car was even part

  of the exhibition at the ŠKODA

  Museum. Iswear by it. I’ve been

  approached by several potential

  buyers, but I’m not going to

  give it up. One day, Imight

  even participate in the ŠKODA

  Classic Tour car race with it.

  IOwn aRarity

  Iown the grey OCTAVIA ICOMBI RS model in

  its original state, produced in 2004, which has

  already driven 250,000 kilometres. Its engine

  is in perfect condition. The stier RS chassis is

  less comfortable, but it can withstand and hold

  beautifully in almost any situation. This year,

  Itook the car on aroad trip to the Balkans, where

  it covered 4,500 km in 18 days and travelled

  through nine countries. It managed the entire

  route without asingle hesitation aside from one

  flat tyre, which was not its fault. Iam thinking

  about keeping the car in agarage and eventually

  turning it into an oldtimer because Iread that

  only afew pieces of this model were produced.

  It is avery rare car, which Ilike, and at the same

  time, it is good that it holds its price.

  Star of the Tuning Competitions

  Ibought the first-generation OCTAVIA in 2008 for everyday driving.

  The car has already undergone its third major transformation and

  won more than 150 awards at tuning competitions and shows. On

  the Czech scene, we won the first place in the ŠKODA category,

  the prize for the best interior and best engine, and also the Best of

  the Best prize. Of course, upon the invitations of the organisers, we

  also took part in tuning competitions abroad where we received the

  first place and best car cups. The ninth place from the Bodensee

  competition in Germany where the winner is selected from

  among 3,000 cars from all over Europe ranks among the greatest

  achievements and the best-ever ranking of the Czech Republic

  Family Treasure

  The mileage on my first-generation OCTAVIA from 1998

  is 245,000 kilometres, and it is powered by a1.9TDI

  engine, which is renowned for its low fuel consumption.

  Although Iam the third owner, the car has always been

  inside the family. Grandpa had it first, but he didn’t drive

  much. When he died, my uncle took it over and then

  handed it to me last year. It is in good condition for its

  age. Ibelieve that it can handle at least twice as many

  kilometres. It is simple, practical and useful! Everything

  can be easily repaired, and it has never brought me any

  trouble.

  Immortal Partner

  Iown the OCTAVIA ICOMBI, 1.9 TDI 81 kW 1999

  model, with acurrent mileage of 316,000 km.

  It has been completely rebuilt according to the

  beautiful design and RS trim only the immortal and

  economical TDI engine, of course, remained. The

  car’smost interesting feature is its modification for

  travelling – since my girlfriend and Ialso use the

  car for longer trips, camping or just free overnight

  sleep, we’ve made numerous modifications. They

  involved the car’srecreational style but kept the

  advantages of unobtrusiveness and economy.

  These include, for example, hot-water independent

  heating, abuilt-in fan for vapour removal, acurtain

  system for total blackout in places where there is

  always light (apolar day), ahanging wardrobe and,

  above all, an integrated shower with water heating.

  The perfect technical condition of the car is due to

  us taking care of it as if it was afamily member.

  It Holds

  I’m one of the happy owners, and Iswear

  by this car. Ibought it about 10 years

  ago. Iwas looking for an OCTAVIA and

  finally found it in aneighbouring village.

  However, it came from Italy. Ihave to

  say that this car never caused me any

  trouble. It has excellent mileage and

  also independent heating, which is abig

  advantage in winter, and everything that

  Ineed fits there. Even though it has the

  weakest 1.9TDI 66kilowatts engine, it

  is afast and powerful machine. I’m very

  happy with it it holds.

  My Darling Dragon

  Ihave a17-year-old first-generation OCTAVIA

  imported from Germany, and it’sbeen with

  me for 10 years. It is afull RS variant with

  197,000km. It has never had any serious

  defect, and so far, Ihave only replaced little

  things, like the wiring, brakes and discs. It

  has never left me stranded. It is my darling,

  Icall it Dragon, and I’m happy with it. Idrive

  it to work, but most importantly, Iuse it to

  transport myself and my Akita Inu dogs to

  exhibitions throughout Europe.

  Return to the World Cup Series

  Following the “warm-up” of 1999, which

  included avictory in Austria’sSemperit Rally,

  the 2000 season arrived. Spectators remember,

  for example, the breath-taking jump by Armin

  Schwarz in the Rally Portugal, whose photos

  and videos went viral. The rising level of the

  ŠKODA OCTAVIA WRC specials produced not

  only afifth place among brands in the 2001

  international championship but also the expansion

  of the ŠKODA Motorsport team’sreach: After

  all, in asingle race, three factory WRCs used an

  average of 150 tyres! After the Rally Cyprus 2003,

  the OCTAVIA WRC handed over the baton to

  amore compact, lighter and more agile successor,

  the FABIA WRC.

  Iliked the OCTAVIA WRC special, even

  though it wasn’t the fastest car. However,

  it was reliable, and Ienjoyed driving it.

  Iremember the Swedish Rally in 2003. We

  fought atotally balanced battle with Carlos

  Sainz, Colin McRae and similar aces!

  … the modern sports career of the

  OCTAVIA model began in 1997 with

  the launch of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA

  Cup on the Brno race circuit? Over

  the following season, it started in

  the OCTAVIA Kit Car series with

  front-wheel drive, paving the way

  for the 300hp OCTAVIA WRC four-

  wheeler.

  The brand has continued its extremely successful history

  in the field of international races and competitions by

  developing the OCTAVIA WRC competition

  special model.

  The second generation ushered in the car’s expansion further afield, as well as new

  technologies that the third generation would improve on even further. Because it is versatile,

  it is widely represented in various fleets as a car that can be used for almost anything.

  Versatile and

  International

  Spontaneous, Sporty

  and Luxurious

  The novelty of the brand’s oer

  was reflected in the wider variety

  of models, including the more

  spontaneous version of the

  SCOUT and the sporty OCTAVIA

  RS and OCTAVIA COMBI RS. All

  of them could be purchased with

  the top interior equipment called

  Laurin & Klement.

  Production on the second generation began in

  2004, and the model built on the success of its

  predecessor by being even greater in almost every

  respect. There were a number of variations (e.g. the

  very first SCOUT model, the more environmentally

  friendly GREENLINE or the first hint of an electrical

  Our customers appreciated our eort to keep the best

  price vs. quality ratio, and our OCTAVIA started competing

  with middle class cars as well, primarily because of the new

  technologies it oered. In addition to the standard ABS and

  automatic braking system, the car featured parking and rain

  sensors, including an EBS system. Its safety was increased by

  adding the automatic activation of its warning lights during

  an emergency brake. In 2007, the car radio’s cassette player

  was replaced with a CD player, and the device could play

  MP3s, too. The car’s design by Thomas Ingenlath started to

  rack up awards for its modern appearance.

  In the Name of Smart Solutions

  At a time when cars began to be packed with

  electronics, the OCTAVIA impressed with its wide range

  of practical assistants. The third generation featured the

  Front Assist system for automatic car stopping in case of an

  impending accident. It also became possible to connect one’s

  mobile phone or tablet. Full-LED headlights were added during

  the car’s modernisation in 2015.

  Safety First

  The gold standard among safety tests, Euro NCAP Agency, awarded

  the third generation the best possible rating in 2013. Since then,

  ŠKODA cars have regularly received the full five-star rating.

  Ecological with CNG Drive

  In 2014, the economical GREENLINE version was

  followed up by the OCTAVIA model with its G-TEC

  variant with natural gas drive. It would become

  especially popular with corporate customers, who enjoy

  great savings despite high mileage. A CNG tank is good

  for 410 km after switching to petrol, the total range

  increases by 920 km. The traditional OCTAVIA drives

  have been exceptionally economical as well and have

  long ranked high in the Economy Run competition.

  New Blood

  The third-generation successor was even lighter,

  safer, more advanced and more spacious in terms of

  technical parameters. At that time, the brand’s heart

  started to pump fresh blood again thanks to its digital

  technologies and smart solutions. Our corporate

  customers in particular liked the more economical

  variant of the OCTAVIA G-TEC with natural gas drive.

  Long-time Partner of the Police

  ŠKODA cars have been supporting the Czech

  Police since 1993. In 2015, the carmaker

  won a big tender to deliver 477 service cars

  with its modified OCTAVIA model. “The police

  need a high-quality and reliable fleet for their

  activities. For many years, ŠKODA vehicles

  have served the police ocers very well in the

  performance of their duties, which is why I

  am glad that we can continue our cooperation

  with the carmaker,” said then–Czech Police

  President Brig. Gen. Tomáš Tuhý.

  For Ministries and the

  Prison Service

  We celebrated a big state tender victory

  this February. The Mladá Boleslav brand

  won the competition announced by

  the Ministry of Finance for the delivery

  of more than 1,370 cars. Our cars

  can be purchased by up to 139 state

  institutions. Thirty third-generation

  vehicles in the COMBI version were

  received by the Prison Service.

  Since their second generation, the OCTAVIA cars have

  been supporting the Nursing Service in Mladá Boleslav.

  In November 2015, the organisation, which takes care

  of more than 700 seniors and disabled people, received

  its beige OCTAVIA AMBIENTE model as one of the first

  customers. Thus, the carmaker started to cooperate

  with various kinds of charitable organisations.

  Cross

  Through operating leasing, Czech

  Red Cross workers use 12 OCTAVIA

  social services. In return, they provide

  first-aid courses to the carmaker’s

  employees and dealers at safety-

  Founded by Zdeněk Svěrák, the public service

  company Paraple Centrum uses the OCTAVIA

  carmaker. The cars help people with spinal

  cord damage when they are in wheelchairs and

  make it easier for their families to cope with

  dicult life situations.

  CHARITABLE PROJECTS

  CareDriver: Cabs for the Needy

  Launched at the ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab Innovation

  Centre, the startup focuses on mobility for

  disadvantaged people. Basically, these are cabs with

  specially trained drivers who transport children,

  seniors and people with disabilities. CareDriver also

  uses OCTAVIA COMBI cars in its fleets in Munich

  and Hamburg.

  Laughter on Four Wheels

  ŠKODA AUTO has been supporting the Hospital

  Clowns project for a long time. In December 2018,

  in addition to the financial assistance it provides,

  it made four cars available to four specially trained

  clowns to travel to children in hospitals and help to

  give them a smile to overcome challenging times.

  The OCTAVIA is the key model for the carmaker.

  From the start, the whole team has been aware

  of the great responsibility they have and has

  done everything possible to make the fourth

  generation a bestseller. We believe that we have

  succeeded and that the newest OCTAVIA will be

  the most successful one yet. It will have a number

  of innovations in design and control mode and

  logic, and it will oer a host of new features.

  With the MQB-37-W platform, the new on-board

  network architecture, new generations of drive

  units and their hybrid versions are also introduced,

  which will significantly contribute to improving

  emissions level. All the new models on

  this base (OCTAVIA, Audi A3, VW Golf and SEAT

  Leon) are starting up practically simultaneously,

  which is quite unusual within the VW Group.

  In terms of product decisions, it was essential

  to keep costs and expenses at the required level

  and to invest in customer-valued measures. Our

  success in this regard has been confirmed by

  the first reactions of journalists who saw the

  car in early October. During the project work,

  cooperation with all the areas was exemplary.

  Speeding Up

  I’ve been working on all the start-ups since

  the model’s first generation. Their speed

  and the number of changes are changing

  dramatically. The second-generation OCTAVIA

  took five years, while the third generation

  started up in a year and a half. The latest one

  has required extensive modernisation in the

  area of Production and Logistics. Among other

  things, the Welding Shop is increasing the

  number of robotic towers, and a new line for

  the fifth door, body, PSD roof, sides and so on

  is being prepared. The update of the robot

  program in the Paint Shop allowed for the

  use of two new metallic colours. Assembly

  has undergone major changes. We modified

  the door conveyor hinges to ensure their pre-

  assembly o the line. The sunroof’s dierent

  shape and concept require a new manipulator

  to be incorporated into the car and for further

  cockpit assembly. The new engines required

  modifications to the equipment for pre-

  assembly, as well as the assembly of units in

  the car.

  Spirited and More Mature

  Although almost identical in size to its predecessor,

  the fourth generation has overall shapes that are much

  smoother, more graceful and elegant at the first glance. Its

  dynamic expression is supported by the lower front mask,

  more inclined C-pillar, shaped sides from which the wheels

  protrude, as well as other elements. Proportion is always

  the key to good design. Thanks to the upright mask and the

  distinctive side bead over the entire length of the car, the

  new OCTAVIA looks more mature. We are pleased that we

  have managed to combine aesthetics with aerodynamics

  very well.

  In the pre-production phase, we examined the car

  for all the important quality criteria. There was

  a great challenge among some common tasks.

  We had to test all the electronic features that

  have been added to the new OCTAVIA regarding

  connectivity and the assistance systems.

  Several dozen control units ensure the correct

  functioning in some levels of the

  model trim. The fine-tuning

  of the compatibility of all of

  the car’s electronic systems

  proved to be the most

  dicult for the start-up

  team.

  Well-equipped

  The main task of the GQD-3 department was to

  ensure the highest quality of purchased electrical

  parts so that the car’s functionality would meet

  our customers’ demanding requirements. We

  have tried to increase user comfort, and thanks

  to its trim, the new OCTAVIA is truly catching up

  with higher-class cars. One of the new comfort

  features of the headlights is the Matrix Beam

  function. This technology makes it possible to

  have automatic high beam activation

  without unwanted glare. The car

  Demand

  Customers expect new models to have modern

  technology, greater security, more comfort and a

  better connection with the environment. At the

  same time, there is a desire on the part of the

  customer to preserve some of the car’s features,

  such as spaciousness, reliability and low operating

  costs, and there are customers who require only

  hybrid or fully electrified models. Higher demands

  were taken into account in the preparation of

  the OCTAVIA oer concept. We also considered

  the specifics of the Chinese and Indian markets.

  The Chinese drivers’ product requirements dier

  significantly from the European ones, for example.

  They emphasise the latest technology and expect

  more chrome elements in cars. The result is a visible

  dierence, especially around the bumper and lights,

  as well as inside the car. At the same time, you will

  not find the COMBI version and diesel engines in

  the oer.

  The OCTAVIA will appeal to customers around

  the world with its attractive dynamic design, large

  interior space, wide range of modern assistance

  systems, engines meeting the strictest emission

  standards and a brand-new interior that has

  undergone a revolutionary development. A plug-in

  hybrid drive model with plug-in charging in its

  standard equipment versions will be available. The

  new OCTAVIA will be the first car in the ŠKODA

  portfolio using the mHEV technology to help reduce
