Skoda Supplements

Škoda Mobil, the employee newspaper of the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker, includes special supplements that focus on especially important topics from Škoda's perspective. Supplements can be a part of the newspaper, in the same format as the newspaper, inserted, for example, in the form of a flyer, or they can be stand-alone unique magazines in a specific format, such as supplements dedicated to new models, the brand's historical anniversaries, or other important information from the company's environment.

    Energy eciency is crucial in all
    areas of Škoda Auto, including the
    Technical Development department.
    This department accounted for 4.5%
    of the total energy consumption in
    Mladá Boleslav in 2023, making it
    one of the most energy-intensive
    areas. Therefore, it was necessary
    to identify and monitor high-energy
    appliances and implement measures
    to optimise them, particularly the
    significant consumption from the
    heating systems in the old Česana
    plant and the Motor Centre.
    Specific Savings
    This year, an Energy-Saving
    Programme is underway in the
    Technical Development department.
    To date, 35 measures with an annual
    savings potential of EUR 381,000
    (approximately CZK 9.7 million) have
    been identified, quantified, approved
    for further exploration and partially
    implemented.
    At the Akuma site, for example,
    asignificant savings potential was
    identified in the reconstruction of
    the boiler rooms. The existing old
    boilers will gradually be replaced
    with new condensing gas boilers
    that can adapt their output to the
    building load. With atwo-year
    return on investment and asaving of
    350MWh per year (which amounts
    to approximately 20% of the gas
    consumption on the premises),
    this also secures future heat supply
    for the development of the entire
    Akuma premises.
    Similarly, the Technical
    Development department, like the
    production facilities, is equipped with
    compressed air pipelines. An analysis
    of the required pressure in dierent
    parts of the premises, conducted in
    cooperation with ŠKO-ENERGO,
    enabled the refinement of the
    minimum required pressure in the
    pipelines and the adjustment of the
    compressor settings. By reducing the
    pressure by an average of 1 bar, over
    400,000Nm

    of compressed air will
    be saved – about the same amount
    of compressed air that one would use
    to pump into abicycle using amanual
    pump over 16 years of continuous
    pumping.
    Road to Sustainability
    Oce buildings are also amajor
    contributor to the Technical
    Development department’senergy
    consumption. Measures to reduce
    energy consumption include the
    use of modern lighting and ecient
    space heating and cooling systems.
    LED lights equipped with motion
    sensors and automatic control
    based on the intensity of natural
    light significantly reduce energy use.
    Similarly, an optimised system of air
    handling and cooling units, which
    adjusts to current needs with timed
    modes, also cuts down on energy
    consumption. However, simulations
    that mimic conditions beyond the
    Arctic Circle, hot southern summers
    and intense sunlight or stress tests
    on engines and other car parts are
    very energy-intensive.
    It is, therefore, essential to use
    the capabilities of modern testing
    equipment to run laboratories
    and workshops economically.
    For example, generating sets are
    equipped with frequency converters
    to ensure their power output is not
    unnecessarily high. Devices based
    on heat pumps can produce heat
    and frost simultaneously. Another
    principle is responsible behaviour;
    maintaining conditions in the test
    booths only as long as necessary and
    planning tests to use the individual
    devices eciently are key strategies.
    Savings in Non-Manufacturing Operations
    Programme to reduce energy consumption
    in the Technical Development department
    Results of the
    Energy-Saving
    Programme in
    Kvasiny
    The Energy-Saving Programme at
    the Kvasiny plant ran for two years,
    from 2022 to 2024. The PSU/3
    – Green Oce has introduced
    measures that are now also being
    examined at the Mladá Boleslav
    paint shop. Impressively, external
    collaborators of the PSU/3
    department have identified savings
    in Kvasiny totalling 1,700 hours
    (equivalent to 212.5 days with an
    eight-hour working day). Along with
    local operations sta, they identified
    52 measures with estimated total
    savings of EUR 2.81 million (more
    than CZK 71 million). Of these,
    16have already been implemented,
    saving EUR 1.14 million (almost
    CZK 29 million), and the remaining
    18 viable measures are currently
    being addressed. Among the
    most significant measures was
    the investment-free adjustment
    of technological parameters in
    painting, which will save more than
    6,000MWh per year.
    As part of the programme, anew
    imaging tool has been introduced
    across all Kvasiny operations to
    monitor energy management
    results. This tool allows for the
    continuous comparison of measured
    consumption with amathematical
    model calculated based on
    production volumes, weather and
    other factors. Every instance of
    savings or waste is reflected in the
    report, thus providing the individual
    plants with atool to implement
    savings in other areas or to prevent
    unnecessary waste.
    GreenFuture
    Improving energy eciency
    in the Technical Development
    department is acrucial step
    towards sustainability. Therefore,
    implementing energy-saving
    measures in administrative
    buildings, test laboratories and
    workshops is absolutely essential.

    An example of an energy-intensive device is achamber with power cylinders and altitude
    simulation, where the eects of airflow under extreme conditions, such as beyond the
    ArcticCircle or during ahot southern summer, are tested, all while simulating dierent altitudes.
