Škoda Auto is continuing itsjourney towards carbon neutrality.ŠKO-ENERGO, a subsidiaryresponsible for ensuringacomprehensive supply of energyto the carmaker and providing heatto Mladá Boleslav, is launching a keyproject to upgrade its heating plantby exclusively employing biomass.This conversion is slated to start in.Switching to processing woodchips and pellets derived fromplant residues will result in fullycarbon-neutral energy production.With operations set to commencewithin three years, the upgradedheating plant will significantlycontribute to fulfilling theenvironmental protection targetsacross the entire value chain, asoutlined in the company-wide NextLevel – Škoda Strategy .“At Škoda Auto andŠKO-ENERGO, our commitment tomeeting our ambitious sustainabilitytargets remains steadfast. Theupcoming transformation representsthe most extensive modernisationof our energy resources in years.The scale of the endeavour, at anestimated cost of CZK . billion,ranks among the largest projects inthe Czech Republic. The modernisation of theheating plant on the premises ofŠkoda Auto is crucial to this plan.Both the production plant andhouseholds in Mladá Boleslav willbenefit from an environmentallyfriendly heat source within threeyears of the start of construction,”adds Tomáš Kubín, ŠKO-ENERGO’sManaging Director.Savings of up to,tonnes of COAs part of the heating plant’smodernisation, all boilers will solelyuse biomass as fuel, consisting of% wood chips and % phytopellets – that is, pellets derived fromplant residues. The biomass usedwill be certified in accordance withEuropean and Czech legislation, withan emphasis on the sustainability ofthe entire supply chain. Once thetransition to these environmentallyconscious fuels is completed, annualcarbon dioxide savings are projectedto reach ,tonnes.Until now, the heating plant hasoperated by using a blend of coaland biomass. Thisinnovation has been introduced by oneof the major soda manufacturers anddistributors, and others will soon followsuit. These “fixed” bottle caps are alteringthe norm, but why are the caps no longereasily detachable?The reason is the gradual implementationof European Union legislative measuresaimed at enhancing sustainability. Theseregulations have multiple objectives, suchas curbing littering and resource wastage,increasing the collection of sorted plasticwaste and reducing the contamination ofthe environment with microplastics.New Czech legislationLast August, the Czech Republic passeda prohibition on the production andsale of certain single-use plastics,thereby aligning national law with theEuropean Directive governing single-use plastics, according to the Ministryof the Environment. Items like single-use plastic cups, cotton swabs, cutlery,plates, straws, stirrers, balloon sticksand food and beverage containersmade of expanded polystyrene or oxo-degradable plastics (which decomposethrough chemical oxidation) are no longerpermitted on the market.The new legislative measures also extendto plastic (or composite) beveragecontainers up to 3 litres, which, as of July2024, must have lids “firmly” attachedto them. This measure aims to mitigatelittering by ensuring caps are more likelyto end up where they belong: in theplastic sorting bin.12
