Skoda Supplements
Škoda Mobil, the employee newspaper of the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker, includes special supplements that focus on especially important topics from Škoda's perspective. Supplements can be a part of the newspaper, in the same format as the newspaper, inserted, for example, in the form of a flyer, or they can be stand-alone unique magazines in a specific format, such as supplements dedicated to new models, the brand's historical anniversaries, or other important information from the company's environment.

Every year,around 300 employees andtheir families take part in theClean Up the Czech Republiccampaign at three Škoda Autoplants in the Czech Republic.In addition, members of theKOVO Trade Union assistthe ČSOP Klenice non-profitorganisation by mowingmeadows, establishing pondsand removing non-native trees.International Biodiversity Day,celebrated on 22 May, emphasisesthe importance of preservingdiversity at the genetic, speciesand ecosystem levels for humanity.In its Green Future strategy andrelated projects, Škoda Auto hasmade along-term commitmentto minimising its environmentalimpact and ensuring sustainableprotection of the environment, thusaligning with the Group’s goTOzeroenvironmental model. The goalis to minimise the environmentalimpact of all mobility products andsolutions throughout their lifecycle.Projects and challengesSince 2007, Škoda Auto has beensupporting reforestation throughthe Škoda Trees grant programme.For every car sold in the CzechRepublic, the carmaker plantsone tree. By the end of 2023,this initiative will have resulted in1,244,080 trees planted.This year brings anewinitiative, the Krakonoš Gardensgrant appeal. The Škoda AutoFoundation, with support fromthe PSU – Environmental andWork Protection department andVolkswagen Financial Services,will support projects focusedon the genetic, environmentaland ecosystem diversity of plantand animal species in specificlocations. The aim is to increasepublic interest in the environmentand actively involve people intaking care of and preserving it.The programme is taking place inthe Mladá Boleslav, Rychnov andVrchlabí regions, with the expertguarantor being the Managementof Krkonoše National Park.Trees, bees, falconsThere are more than 1,700 trees,as well as hedges and shrubs, onthe premises of the three Czechproduction plants. Over an areaof more than 507,000 m2, theyprovide habitat for numerousspecies of insects and otheranimals. The Vrchlabí plant, forexample, houses four beehives thatare home to some 160,000 bees.Apair of peregrine falconsnests on the chimney of theŠKO-ENERGO heating plantin Mladá Boleslav. After twoyears, they have returned to thebirdhouse, having nested on thelower chimney of the Paint Shopin the meantime. In May, twofledglings hatched from their eggs,which were the first eggs in theCzech Republic to be monitoredby Alka Wildlife. Alka Wildlifedeals with wildlife protection, andon its website, it also maps thenesting of falcons, which are anendangered species in the CzechRepublic. An online camera allowsviewers to observe the falcons inMladá Boleslav.The falcon birdhouse wasinstalled on the chimney’sgalleryby ŠKO-ENERGO in 2013, andthe first birds of prey nested theretwo years later. With aheight of167.5 metres, the birdhouse is thesecond-tallest on Czech industrialchimneys, and so far, 28 falconfledglings have called it home.Diverse MayInternational Biodiversity DayGreenery around usAdendrological survey is carried out annuallyin Mladá Boleslav. “We need to be awareof what grows where and, above all, thecondition of the trees,” explains Luděk Holubfrom the PSZ/42 – Infrastructure Operationdepartment. During the survey, two externalspecialists inspect the entire plant area, thearea around the Pentagon, the AdministrationCentre and the car park around the ŠkodaMuseum. Each tree and shrub group hasaunique number that is recorded in theboth tabular and graphic formats to createacomprehensive inventory. The graphicalrepresentation takes the form of amapdepicting the plant and other locations.VitalityThe dendrological survey focuses onmonitoring and recording numerousparameters, such as genus and species, trunkcircumference at aheight of 1.3metresfrom the base, tree height, crown diameter,physiological age and vitality (the healthstatus and prospects for the tree – ed.).Based on the collected date, treatmentmeasures are proposed for trees in need.This may involve various types of pruning,removal of dry branches or ensuring thetree’sstability and healthy growth.Tree conditionThe summary report of thedendrological survey provides treatmentrecommendations, pruning guidelinesand tree-planting suggestions, as wellas proposals for removing dead orunpromising trees. “Of course, we replacecut trees with new ones. If atree requiresapermit for cutting, we have to apply tothe environmental department of the citycouncil. In such cases, replacement plantingis mandatory,” says L. Holub. “Thanks toprofessional surveys, we are aware of thecondition of our trees and can regularly andproperly take care of them. For example,there are two rare Chinese metasequoiason the premises of the Mladá Boleslav plant,one of which is 26 metres tall, making it thetallest tree,” concludes L.
