Consumers often do not know thatpoisons are hidden in the print. How to avoidthem? The use of heavy metals is legally restricted in a whole range of products. Theproducts that normally come in contact withthat stimulate the release of lead and cadmium in the acidic environment of the mouth.However, demonstrating whether a productmeets the migration limits is costly and tiboratory tests. In addition, the tests do nottake into account the fact that we wash,heat and scratch the dishes with cutlery.HOME TEST HELPSYou can manage where control bodies cannot. Both lead and cadmium are mainly foundin the colours of print and glaze. Pay attention especially to yellow, orange and redglaze as there is a risk of lead and cadmium release if they were not burnt at a sufficient temperature for a certain period oftime. The colour must stick on the dishes –try to scrape the glaze off with a knife, forkor scourer. If it peels off, throw the dish away.The colour should be resistant to acidic foodsonto the colour surface and let it work overnight. Alternatively, you can immerse thetested dishes into a bowl of vinegar for threedays and watch whether the colour becomeslighter, which it should not. If the dish passes the test, also put it to a resistance testsoda with one litre of water and boil it. Thenimmerse the dish in a bath for six hours andwatch the colour change.CAUTION ABOVE ALL ELSEEven if your favourite bowl has passed thetest at home, pay attention to the way youhandle it. Before you start using your colourdishes, wash them thoroughly in water witha little vinegar. You had better never heatfood in it. At increased temperatures, heavyish at a higher rate.
