Škoda Mobil, the employee newspaper of the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker, includes special supplements that focus on especially important topics from Škoda's perspective. Supplements can be a part of the newspaper, in the same format as the newspaper, inserted, for example, in the form of a flyer, or they can be stand-alone unique magazines in a specific format, such as supplements dedicated to new models, the brand's historical anniversaries, or other important information from the company's environment.

14World Water Day is held onMarch each year to highlightthe importance of water and theneed for responsible resourcemanagement. As the climatechanges and water becomesscarcer, addressing water resourceissues has become increasinglyurgent. The climate crisis aectsthe entire world and has animpact on everyone’sdaily life.We are facing more frequent andintense droughts, floods and otherextreme weather phenomena.Reduced availability and decliningquality of water resources aect allaspects of human life and naturalecosystems.Water recirculation and savingsThe automotive industry is notstanding still. Water is essentialfor many production processes,and at Škoda Auto, ensuring itsavailability and quality is apriority.The company’senvironmentalpolicy is based on the principlesof careful water and resourcemanagement. The carmakeris working hard to set specifictargets for reducing theconsumption of water used inproduction and is actively seekingto limit direct withdrawals fromthe Jizera, Bělá and Elbe rivers. Itis also continuously exploring newways to save water, particularlythrough the adoption of moderntechnologies.In recent years, water recyclingsystems have been introduced,which have allowed Škoda to re-use approximately ,cubicmetres of water in its productionprocesses last year alone. Thisrepresents % of the totalamount of water used by theŠkoda brand in the Czech Republicin . Within the VW Group,Škoda is one of the brands withthe lowest water consumptionper car produced. Last year, thisfigure was just . cubic metresper car at Czech plants. To putthis into perspective, that volumeis equivalent to roughly fullbathtubs, each holding litres.Since , Škoda has reducedwater usage per car by almost%, thereby saving the equivalentof seven full bathtubs per vehicle.Škoda Auto has also introducedanew rainwater strategy. Itaccumulates rainwater in retentiontanks and uses it to irrigategreen spaces, including publicareas, and to clean roads. Thissystem allows the company toutilise approximately ,cubicmetres of rainwater per year.Climate change is causing not onlydroughts but also floods. Apartof the Technical DevelopmentCampus in Mladá Boleslav islocated in the floodplain ofthe Jizera River, making floodpreparedness essential. To mitigaterisks and prevent damage, thecompany’sfirefighters conductannual drills to rehearse floodresponse measures and post-flood recovery. In addition,reconstruction of the flood wallalong the Jizera River is currently inprogress, with the first two stagesalready underway.Water Is aTreasureŠkoda Auto reducesitsconsumptionInstead of wasting,we recycle andinnovateRaising awareness of sustainable wastemanagement is the focus of GlobalRecycling Day (#GlobalRecyclingDay),observed annually on 18 March. This isthe approach taken by Škoda Auto, whichrecognises recycling as acrucial tool inthe fight against climate change. Whilemuch of the debate centres on energy-related emissions, it is equally importantto consider the impact of emissions frommaterial production, including metals,wood, construction materials and plastics.They keep growing. How materials aremanaged in the economy is at the heartof the circular economy. Its principles– preserving the highest possible valueof materials and products throughouttheir lifetime – are also embraced byŠkoda Auto. The carmaker places greatemphasis on sustainability and recyclingin its production processes and overalloperations and focuses on several keyareas.Pathways to sustainabilityand recycling at Škoda Auto1Uses recycled plastics and other moreenvironmentally friendly materials,with up to 40 kg net weight incorporatedinto new models produced from 2025.2Continuously introduces newtechnologies and processes tominimise waste from car production andensure the ecient use of raw materials.3Focuses on recycling and re-usingtraction batteries as the number ofelectric cars grows. These batteries can berepurposed as stable energy storage forrenewable energy or used to cover peakdemand and ease pressure on the grid.4Invests in modernising productionfacilities to reduce their environmentalfootprint. Reduction of EnvironmentalImpact of Production (UEP) key indicatortracks reductions in energy consumption,water consumption, CO emissions, volatileorganic compound (VOC) emissions andwaste production per car produced.5Aims to maximise the recycling andre-use of car components, followingthe principles of the circular economy (seethe March 2024 issue of Škoda Mobil).6Informs employees and customersabout the importance of recyclingand sustainable practices.
