Skoda Supplements

Škoda Mobil, the employee newspaper of the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker, includes special supplements that focus on especially important topics from Škoda's perspective. Supplements can be a part of the newspaper, in the same format as the newspaper, inserted, for example, in the form of a flyer, or they can be stand-alone unique magazines in a specific format, such as supplements dedicated to new models, the brand's historical anniversaries, or other important information from the company's environment.

What are
diisocyanates?
These chemicals are mainly
used to manufacture
polyurethane products like
foams, adhesives, sealants,
elastomers, paints and
coatings. They are strong
allergens that can cause
acute respiratory or skin
reactions even with a single
exposure, making strict
adherence to occupational
safety rules on site
essential.
Škoda Auto is aiming to reduce
the environmental impacts of its
production process and increase
respect for natural resources and
employee health. Several specialists
within the company are involved
in meeting these goals, which
include reducing the quantity and
hazardousness of chemical products.
Thinner ﬁller layer
The paint shops use the largest
amount of chemical products in
the car manufacturing process.
In 2023, in collaboration with its
suppliers, the carmaker managed
to optimise the base paint (or
ﬁller) formulation. The previous
ones had been hazardous to the
water environment and employee
health and posed increased risks
in case of spills or accidents. With
the new formulations, only the
risk of eye irritation remains. This
innovation not only makes the ﬁller
application process greener but
also safer, thus ensuring another
innovative measure in the painting
process.
In 2022, the company introduced
a technological solution that saved
up to 720 tonnes of material
annually, as well as approximately
50,000kilometres that would
otherwise have been covered by
trucks transporting material from the
supplier (as detailed in the November
2022 issue of Škoda Mobil). At that
time, the carmaker implemented
new painting technology at its Czech
production plants, enabling the
application of a thinner layer of paint,
known as ﬁller (or primer). This ﬁller
on the car’s paintwork helps to even
out the microscopic unevenness of
the cataphoric layer and provides a
base for the paint. It is applied in one
of four colours (white, grey, black
and red) to match the resulting body
shade. The fact that even this thinner
layer meets the extreme demands
for durability and quality is mainly due
to the new formulation and material,
which is also water-thinnable.
Reduction of diisocyanates
Last year, the carmaker adapted its
production processes in response to
new European legislation restricting
the use of a group of chemicals
knowns as diisocyanates. To comply
with the legal requirements, Škoda
Auto, in collaboration with the
Škoda Academy, prepared training
for aected employees. At the same
time, it reached out to plants using
diisocyanates to suggest suitable
alternatives to these materials. These
alternatives are often slightly more
expensive, requiring involvement
from the Purchasing area to ensure
chemical safety requirements are
considered when dealing with
suppliers, especially concerning
process materials. Of the original
65with diisocyanates identiﬁed
across Škoda Auto, only 49 are now
in use. Their use has been eliminated
at 21workplaces. The number of
suppliers providing diisocyanate
materials to the carmaker was also
reduced.

Audit
demonstrates
high standard
After weeks of work by TÜV NORD
auditors, the carmaker retained its
Integrated Management System (IMS)
certiﬁcates in quality, environmental
protection, energy saving, occupational
safety and information. Thus, several
standards were approved at the
same time during one audit. The IMS
certiﬁcation adhered to international ISO
and VDA standards, which are the entry
requirements for the approval of sales of
vehicles and components that are vital
to Škoda’s competitiveness. Maren Gräf,
Board Member for People & Culture, led
and presented the results, alongside the
commissioners for the individual systems.
“The external audit is key to ensuring
that our products and services meet
the standards and expectations of our
customers. It gives us conﬁdence that
our processes and systems in all the areas
meet the standards set, thus bolstering
our competitiveness and customer
satisfaction,” said M. Gräf.
A team of internal auditors from the
GQZ – Quality Management System,
FIG–IT Governance, Security and
Service Management and PSU –
Environmental and Work Protection
departments (see the bottom photo)
prepared all organisational units for
the audit to guarantee its success. The
auditors commended the digitisation
of processes in all the systems, such as
using the DFView platform for employee
training and ensuring easy access to up-
to-date training documents. The well-
applied principle of the HR advice centre
was noted as a strength. In occupational
health and safety, they valued the
implementation of numerous projects
reducing workplace OSH risks and the
focus on ergonomics.
